Gravity's Child
Chapter 1 - Denial of Self Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. But that’s not quite true. Null had heard everything. The memory of it repeat itself over and over in a maddening cadence in his mind as he listened to the thin whine of the Foldspace Drive of the ship. The low, subtle hum of the gravity generators were the only thing that kept him from falling into that nightmare again, reliving the moment that changed his life forever. He crouched low behind a crate of supplies in the cargo hold of a Mercenary ship called the Hammer. He sat listening; waiting. In the back of his mind, he could still hear that damning scream, over and over again. He inhaled slowly, trying to keep himself calm. His exhale was shaky as the ever present sound of the Fold powering up threatened to overwhelm him. Just as the sounds started to become unbearable, Null’s patience was finally rewarded. The sound of boots on the metal deck of the cargo hold approached, clacking and filling the space with something other than that cursed whine.

Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. Valyria gazed up at the sky that was covered by dark clouds; she wouldn’t know, as she had never been to space, despite her planet’s designation as an intergalactic trading hub.

Chapter 1 - Friend or Murderer
'Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say.' Arya's mom told her with a wink. Arya and her mom were sitting on the window ledge, their favourite spot staring at the space with chocolate chai. Arya's parents Ram and Sita, were considered THE most brilliant people in the colony. They were working on a project to discover and communicate with other space colonies. Once Earth had become uninhabitable - groups of humans had taken the space fuel Allinone to start new colonies in space. And they had not been able to get in touch since then. Arya loved these evenings with her mom when they would have chai and talk about the history and other topics. Suddenly the glass pane broke, and her mom was sucked into the space. Arya tried to grab her, but the glass pane was back up. She kept pommelling the windows with her fists.

A New World
Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. At ten miles above the Earth’s surface, my surroundings are only the infinite emptiness of the dark horizon, speckled by the celestial bodies. Behind me hangs the pale moon, catching me in its vast shadow. Far below, I can see the multitude of colors and shapes that form my home world’s surface. It is supremely beautiful although I never thought I would see it from this perspective. Being here now, is the achievement of a lifetime for me, but to be here hovering in space without the slightest support, suit, or other man-made apparatus is the crowning achievement of all humanity.

Any Other Questions?. Runner-Up in New Worlds Challenge.
Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. There are a lot of statements like that: that space is the last horizon of discovery, that robots are eventually gonna to rule the supercluster, or that there’s always a bigger fish—whatever that’s supposed to mean.
