Barrels decorated the city one particular year. There were fifty of them donated.

People thought they were a quaint way of dressing up building entrances, making my apartment building more attractive from the street.

Over the years they expanded to more of the city, and even some homes. Nobody ever questioned who kept donating them to Riverside. Then, there was the day we learned the truth about the barrels.

A teenager lost control of Daddy’s F-150. As my patrol car slowed, I saw the bones from the barrel. The barrels were all over the city.
