Stepprehension

That precarious and visceral sensation of uncertainty about whether or not you missed a step while going downstairs...

Runner-Up in the Neolomicro Challenge
Not pictured: Dignity and/or grace.

It's the middle of the night, but for you, time is frozen. Your midnight snack run downstairs isn't uncommon, but your current situation certainly is. Your stomach is no longer concerned with tangible things like leftover pizza and fries, and it instead contemplating the very concept of gravity itself as it drops, seemingly far beneath the floor.

The stairs down to the kitchen are usually easy for you to navigate; you've even learned to count their cadence to the beat of your favorite showtune from childhood. But tonight, your brain and body had other plans...

As you reached the end of the jingle, your descent was interrupted by a disconnect between your mind and your legs; maybe you weren't paying attention, or maybe you were thinking about that difficult choice between pepperoni and veggies. Whatever the reason, your arms are suddenly splayed and your feet are sweeping forward to make up the difference, as you suddenly fear your count was off and you're falling the rest of the way down. You've got that rollercoaster drop queasiness in your gut, and you're already calculating hospital bill totals...

The exquisite moment ends, and your feet fall safely to the floor. Nobody saw your acrobatics, and your body and pride are left perfectly intact. Of course, you vow to yourself that this will never happen again, but it's only a matter of time until it does...
