It was a midsummer, hot late afternoon. Nina and her friends were looking for something fun to do. Hey, guys, let’s go to the pond, Jelisa insisted. No, I don’t think we should; it’s getting too late, Cynthy exclaimed in a paranoid tone. Why not Cynthy repeated? I don’t think it would be such a good idea. Come on, Cinthy, we’ll be back before the sunsets. Cynthy Looks around, biting her nails and with a nervous tone, ok, let’s go.
Nina, Jelisa, and Cynthy had been friends for quite a long time. Nina being the sweet one she was tall with Long curly clear brown hair and aspired to be a model. one Jelisa, the outspoken one Jelisa rocked the shaved sides and colored hair; she had quite a few piercings. Then there’s Cynthy, the shy one; she wore baggy clothes with oily but red wavy hair; she is the smartest of the group. They all were close and always had each other’s back. They made a pack never to leave the other behind. But that changed on that day at the pond.
They all head to the forest, which is about a few blocks away from Cynthy’s home. The sun seemed to be setting so fast, Cynthy thought. They continued walking and were stopped in their tracks by what appears to be a yellow tape of some sort. I told you guys this wasn’t a good idea, Cynthy shouted. What happened here two weeks ago? They found a body here. They say it was a horrific scene; they couldn’t even identify the body at first glance. The victims’ parents only knew. It was her remains because she wore a necklace around her neck, but the locket charm is missing. "That’s horrible," Nina thought; how could this happen.
I want to go in! Jalisa yelled, we shouldn't do this its crime tape here for a reason Cynthy said frantically. She’s right; Nina agrees with Cynthy. Guys, come on, Jelisa, begging the two, only for 5 minutes, and then we’ll leave. Cynthy and Nina look at each other, nodding their heads in agreement; okay but only for 5 minutes. Jalisa lifts the crime scene tape and heads over to an old house near the pond. The place looks abandoned. I’m going to see what’s inside. Jalisa was always the cocky one, never afraid of anything. They all walk towards the house slowly and carefully. What if someone is here? I don’t think anyone lives here, Jelisa says confidently.
They get to the old abandoned house; it was empty; no one has lived there for a while. The lake house has been there for a few decades; no one bothered to have it torn down. The town saw the lake house as a historic building and kept it as a tourist attraction. There are many stories about the lakehouse. People say that the family got murdered, and their body parts got scattered throughout areas of the pond.
Legend has it that an ancient being called the Anunbuwak ruled this land around the pond centuries ago. They lived in peace until the whole village got wiped out by the fire. No one knew why it happened, but it destroyed an entire civilization that night. The spirit of the Anunbuwak hunts this pond and the area around it until this day, seeking revenge.
The three of them continued looking around the old house. It had an old moldy stench, it was still fully furnished, but everything was damp. The floorboards creaked, and the photos on the wall warped. Jelisa separated from the group to head upstairs. Cynthy and Nina decided it was better they stuck together. The two walked around with their arms entwined, shivering as they looked around the old lakehouse. “I don’t like this,” Cynthy said nervously “me either,” Nina agreed.
Jelisa looked around on the second floor of the house. Jelisa opens the door closest to her. It's is a large bedroom. The stench of the mold took her breath away. It's a large bedroom. On the floor beside the old is an old scrapbook. Jelisa picked up the old scrapbook turning the pages with her fingertips carefully; their pictures are clear enough to make out some of the images. There was a picture of a family on the frozen pond. It appears they were ice fishing. In the photo, the family is smiling, holding up their catch. On the back of the picture, it reads, “Icefishing with the family.”
Jelisa got so caught in the photo album she lost track of time. Jelisa continues looking through the scrapbook. Suddenly there’s a cold, dry hand grabbed her arm, the other covering her mouth. Meanwhile, Nina and Cythy continued to look around on the first floor. Nina got an eerie feeling that someone or something is watching them. Nina turned to Cynthy and let her know she wanted to leave immediately. She agreed, and they both called out to Jelisa. But there was no answer. Nina a Cynthy grew concerned, but before they could think, a dark shadowy figure appeared. The two screamed, running in the opposite direction of what they had just seen. Cynthy and Nina continued running; they realized they left their friend behind. They stopped to catch their breath. What should we do? Cynthy asked. Nina looked at Cynthy; we can’t go back.
Nina and Cynthy walked home in silence. They were both confused and terrified, looking back to see if Jelisa followed them. But only the sounds of crickets and their feet hitting the ground. Nina looked to Cynthy for answers. What are we going to do? What will we tell her parents? We should both go home act normal if anyone asks; we tell them Jelisa separated from us earlier. Nina didn’t like the idea of lying, but she didn’t know what else to do. Cynthy hugged Nina reassuring her everything will be ok. They both went their separate ways.
That night Cynthy headed to her room. She closed her bedroom door and locked it so that no one will interrupt her. Cynthy went to her closet, opening it revealing a shrine. Cynthy reached into her back pocket and pulled out a photo of Jelisa. She lit three candles and closed her eyes. Cynthy murmured the words; I hope this sacrifice pleases you Anunbuwak . She burned the image of her friend with a smirk on her face.
