I have never liked presents, which is weird for a lot of people. They always ask why. Why say no to free stuff? But if you want to give someone something, Like you truly wanted to give them something. Just give it to them. Don’t wait for a birthday, Christmas, or New Year. Whenever really. Life is too short to worry about presents.
The bathroom lights flicker on and off and back on, as the shower water gets hotter filling the room with steam.
I let my mind wander, tell the sounds of the shower to disappear and I am alone with my thoughts. I find that darkness is more beautiful than light. You see people always find that beauty is light, with its sparkly sunsets and crystal blue waters. But what they don’t see is that the light is filled with the nonsense noise of people complimenting you and telling you that everything is fine. But I know that the real beauty lies within the darkness of our world. Hidden in the cracks and crannies, in the depths of the ocean, and lurking in caves. That’s where the real beauty lies. Because when the lights go out those that compliment you, loved you, and told you that everything is fine. They break down and the truth comes out. What they think about you comes out.
Nothing is fine.
You wanna know why. That beauty lies in the darkness, it's because the darkness does not lie. It doesn’t cover secrets with its light glowing color. It shows them all. All the scars and truth, all laid out there all the time. You know what’s real and what's fake.
Yes, you can't see in the darkness, but I think that's a good thing. Because when you can't see, your other senses kick in. Senses that don't desert you. If something smells bad, it smells bad. And you hear the words people say about you. Those hurtful words. Those words break your heart and tear you down. You hear the truth.
I believe the darkness stays in hiding because of what's to come. It knows that the light has grown weak with its lies and treason. One day we'll wake up and see not light but darkness everywhere. We will see the truth. The ugly. The lost. The evil. We will see the world how it truly is. Not beautiful nor hopeful but full of hate and treason. It will happen when the light doesn’t want to cover up the bullshit anymore. I don't blame it. Look at this earth. We practically killed it. There’s almost nothing left.
If darkness comes it will first bring chaos then it will bring silence to the world. Cars will stop driving, people will stop talking, and nature in its true form will awake. Creatures that have been asleep for centuries will awake in silence and the world will be pure again.
Turning off the water and stepping onto the cold bathroom tile. My leg hair is sprouting up from my once freshly shaven legs. I open the door to exit the bathroom. The lights go out. Aha. It finally happened, the darkness won.
Silence.
“I can hear the crickets, it’s beautiful.” A single tear slides down my face. No more pain, no more lies. I breathe in the darkness, allowing it to fill my lungs, finding its way to my heart. The pain of my life disappear.
“Gary turn on the lights you jackass.”
No please mom, let it be dark. I need it to be dark.
“Karen, I am saving electricity.”
Yes, leave them off.
“That's just an excuse for the fact that you're broke. Turn on the lights, you jackass.”
The lights flickered back on, I guess the darkness will just have to win another day.
