I loved Shakespeare but when he turned up on my doorstep to declare his love, I was more than a little surprised.

He wasn't dressed to impress, or at least, not me, in his ruff and tights. I'm no Elizabeth. He was just drawing attention to himself.

"It's not Hallowe-en, you fucking weirdo!" a boy in a hoodie shouted, riding past.

"Pray tell, fair maiden, what is a weird-o?"

But he never waited for an answer. Too busy spouting poetry. Yawn! Turns out he just won't shut up so in the end, I just closed the door in his face.

100 words exactly

I'm not going to lie: I'm feeling the strain of writing a microfiction every day. Today's is a drabble, a story in exactly 100 words. They will probably be drabbles for the rest of the week as my well has run dry and rather than finding writing enjoyable, I am finding it a drudge, an experience I have never encountered before. I still have stories in me but I don't want to rush them and write them to a deadline and that is what I am struggling with at the moment.

I know. I could stop the challenge but I've come so far. I don't want to give in but this weekend, I resented having to write, like it was a chore like doing the ironing or cleaning toilets.

Anyway, that's why this is shorter. Thanks, Ray, for reminding me of drabbles and keeping my streak going. His latest one is here:

I used a prompt:

Your favourite historical figure is in love with you

Ha! Well if you can produced this when you're not feeling it, then wow! I still thought this was brill.... especially the unappreciative cyclist! ha! I think you have done smashing keeping these stories going. Good on you!

This was too funny! Sorry you're running out of steam!! What of you switched it up and wrote poetry... like prose?? It's very close to micro fiction?? 🤷‍♀️

So often, I've heard it metaphorically said, but I literally spit out my drink at "It's not Hallowe-en, you fucking weirdo!" Thankfully I was drinking water. This drabble is fantastic. 🤣

This is actually quite funny. I really enjoyed it and actually wanted more interaction between the characters. Anyhow, hope you get out of your drudge soon. I too have been feeling the drudgery of writing. Anyways, good job and carry on! :)

Rachel, this story gave me a laugh! And this challenge is called exactly that because of how difficult it is! I’m amazed your well hasn’t run dry and sent you into a spiral sooner, you’re truly an inspiration on this app with how hard you fight to find and embrace your creativity through so many stories. Sometimes writing does feel like a chore. We’re human—we bore of everything and life exhausts us, and it’s nothing to be ashamed or down about. It’s completely normal. But I find that funneling that frustration or exhaustion or even momentary hatred towards writing into writing can make for a powerful piece! ;) Wishing you a recovery and hope you feel a little better soon!

Strain of writing a piece every day or not, ""It's not Hallowe-en, you fucking weirdo!" a boy in a hoodie shouted, riding past" is one of the funniest things I've ever read. You captured a moment perfectly. Great job, as always! You can keep doing this! I'm on a running streak (running a minimum of one mile every day) and oof, sometimes that mile feels really long. So I feel you! Try to take it easy with some drabbles and let your brain breathe. You got this!

A really clever, fun, and hilarious piece! I haven't said nearly enough (or maybe at all) how incredible of an endeavor this story-a-day is. It's truly inspiring, and you've produced such wonderful work so far. Hoping that you can rest, recover, and rejuvenate in whatever ways are best for you! :)

Think of all the books you are going to publish Rachel after the year is out!! I will be purchasing my compilations! Drabbles are good too. I’ve only read few here. But I really (thanks for being so transparent) I feel for ya. When you said it’s not enjoyable …yeah it should be, at least to a degree. Are there ten word micros? 🤪 😸 Sorry I’ve been a bit out of action here and everywhere actually the last week or so. I always enjoy what you have to offer. P.S You were a bit hard on young Willie! 😄

This was nice and whimsical, Rachel! Wishing you to catch a second breath for writing.

  • Hahahahahahahahaha I would have closed the door in his face too! I'm so sorry you're beginning to feel this way about writing. I hope this feeling goes away soon. Sending you lots of love and hugs ❤️

The year is racing to its end; I will carry on publishing and avoid perishing if you will!
