Chosen Nexus

Fires raged in every direction, buildings that had still managed to survive on there foundations crumbled here and there finally succumbing to the destruction, unfortunate souls that had not been blessed to go right away laid on the streets crying from the pain they were experiencing; some were burnt so thoroughly it was hard to tell whether they were male or female, other bodies were contorted in such unimaginable positions that if anyone had been around to see they would have wondered for a brief second why the poor souls didn’t put themselves out their misery and then without second thought putting the poor souls out there misery, and why still others had lost so much blood from the extensive wounds they had occurred they laid on the ground rambling stuck between a state of life and death.

Looking upon this devastation it would be hard to imagine anyone was still alive or even bothering to stay alive, but surprisingly there was. A girl in her teens scrambled along the street dragging her left leg with her right arm where the thigh and calf had disconnected at the knee, the upper right side of her body had second-degree burns, a trail of blood followed her every movement and since there was no evident wounds that were bleeding other than the blood drifting from the left arm holding the back of her head one would be led to believe the bleeding was coming from the gaping hole in the back of her head, and to top everything else off the parts of her body that had managed to survive harm looked as if they were ready to rip open from underneath the pressure the veins and arteries were emitting.

The girls appearance wasn’t the weird thing about the whole situation, it was the fact that instead of writhing and crying in pain like all the other people around her she was oblivious to everything around her; her pain, the other people, or the state of the environment. Choosing to laugh and drivel with imaginary companions; which would make one think she had gone mental or a more logical explanation hopped up on painkillers. She was immune to it all and she was on a mission, nothing short of death could or would stop her from finding her companions with the help of her imaginary ones. Today, was suppose to be a day of new beginnings and fresh starts, but instead it looked as if it would become the exact opposite. She limped till she could do so no more the four faces embedded on the inside of her brain. It was not long as she laid there still talking to her imaginary friends that the loss of blood caught up to her and consumed her into darkness.

When she awoke she found herself strapped down to a bed. On one side of her she heard voices whispering. “Please is anyone there?”

“The girl awakens, what do we do?” One voice responded in the distance.

“If she survived then she must be worthy.” Another voice answered the first.

“But she wasn’t among the chosen and if he ever finds out you made someone who wasn’t a part of the plan from the beginning into one of us he’ll have your head.”

“Relax maybe it won’t take.”

“And if it does?’

“Lets test it out first.”

Two figures cloaked by shadows appeared on either side of her. “It’s a miracle that she made it.” A disbelieving male voice to her right said.

She was going to ask where she was, but before she could ask her question her body involuntarily twitched causing her to cry out in pain and struggle against her bondage to get some release. “I can take away the pain and make you whole again. All you have to do is ask.” The voice to her left said stroking her hair to try and calm her.

She cried as she felt another twitching in her nerves that ran along her spine. “No, not without my friends. I’ve lived with loaded pain all my life and they’re the only ones that make enduring it worth while.” She managed to say against the pain.

“So if you had your friends you would want to live.” She nodded and sobbed as the spasms spread.

“Don’t do it. She is too needy of human companionship he would not approve of that kind of necessity.” The voice to the right said.

“Look at her. Her wounds are extensive and who knows how long she’s been out there exposed to those chemicals in the air. She must be worthy.”

“Your too soft man. Giving her that will cost you more than you're probably willing to give.”

“I’m not scared of him. Anyone who hasn’t died or mutated yet deserves to be given the chance we’ve been.”

“Whatever I’m out of here. I’m not getting dragged into this. You just better hope you know what your doing.” The voice to the right's shadow turned to leave.

“I do I’ve already done it to three others and they’ve taken to it quite well.”

“You’ve done what to three others?” A third voice said making the figure of the second voice halt where he was.

The girl didn’t have a chance to see who had come in before something sharp was stuck in her and she felt a coppery taste in her mouth as she blacked out again.

Skylar Romaniscx looked upon the sleeping form of Destiny Andales. It wouldn’t be long before Destiny’s dream would reach its end and her guilt would drive her to hurt herself. Skylar couldn’t understand why anyone given the life she was given would want to end it whether subconsciously or consciously. As he had predicted Destiny’s dream had ended and a whirlpool of water encased her body in an attempt to cut off her flow of air. Shaking his head he sat next to Destiny placing a hand over her head. “Des I don’t know why every year you persist with this futile quest of yours to kill yourself. All your accomplishing is driving yourself crazy. Is that what you want? You know what the elders will do if they believe you are of no more use to them. Do you really want to end up in that room and never be seen again? That’s a fate worse than death and considering we can’t die I would think you would have sense enough to know when to give up.”

The encasement slowly disappeared and Destiny opened her eyes to stare at Skylar. Tears began to fall from her eyes. Skylar reached out to encircle her in a hug, but before he could she grabbed his head placing her thumbs over his eye sockets sending bolts of electricity coursing through his body. “Why don’t you ever listen!!!?” Destiny screamed at him as she applied pressure to his eyes drawing blood. “I don’t need you or anyone coming in here trying to talk sense to me!! I know we can’t die and no I don’t want to go to the room!!!”

“Then why do what you do?” Skylar asked as he tried to get away from Destiny’s grasp.

Every year he always asked the same question and Destiny never gave him an answer. “Why are you struggling to get away from me Skylar?”

“You know why.”

“Exactly.” She let go of him and pushed him back. Skylar stumbled backwards hitting her door. “Now get out unless you want to stay and suffer with me.” He stood his ground trying to ignore the pain as the blood dried up and he regained his vision. “Have it your way.”

Objects began to whirl around the room by unforeseen forces, fierce turbulent shaking rocked the room causing cracks to appear on the floor, fireballs began to hurl across the room setting fire to anything flammable it came in contact with, and lightning bolts bounced off the walls where every once in a while they would hit Destiny causing her to emit blood curdling screams from her mouth. Skylar stepped forward to go help her, but she wouldn’t allow it. “GET OUT!!!!!!!!!! NOW!!!!!!!!!” A strong gust of wind whipped around him and threw him out the room. He tried to get back in, but the door was barred.

“DAMN!!!” He punched the door before heading down the hall to try and salvage what time he had lost in his futile quest.

Miyrah Arabella Isis Cheveaux laid in bed staring at the ceiling. Any other night, any other day she would have been able to block out the thoughts, but this wasn’t the case. And after a thousand years one would think she would have been use to the thoughts, but this wasn’t the case neither. If anything she was sick of them, sick of not getting a wink of sleep, sick of having to go to war the next day, and most of all sick of having to just standby while one’s persons thoughts was tearing her up inside and out. She turned over in her bed placing her pillow over her head in an effort to block out the voices. Not succeeding she sat up in bed and swung her legs off the side. “Don’t go, she needs to get through it herself.” One voice said standing out from the others that ran across her mind.

“She will fall to insanity and that is one thing our bodies cannot heal.” Miyrah thought slipping out of bed and dawning on a robe.

Opening up her door she found herself blocked by Skylar Romaniscx the keeper of dreams. “Shouldn’t you be off settling peoples minds so that they may sleep peacefully?” Miyrah asked trying to get past him.

“Shouldn’t you be in bed getting rest for the war tomorrow?” He countered.

“If someone was doing his job maybe I could get some rest, but I can’t. So if you would kindly move.”

“I know where you are going and I can’t let you. You know what Zurich said, no one can help her.”

“So you would rather see her go insane instead of have her become dependent on others.”

“You know I would like nothing more than to settle her dreams, but it is against the Elders rules.”

“Screw the rules!!! The rules apply to no one, but the Elders and their pets so that no one will oppose them.”

“I may be mistaken, but aren’t you one of their pets. You are after all part of the Alpha Team.”

Miyrah was going to say something, but had nothing to say back. She was part of the Alpha Team or to the rest of the sector “The Elders Chosen Pets,” but every step of the way she and her cohorts had challenged the rules. One more breakage of any of the rules and they would all be knocked down in status earning their keep within the ring. And she was risking just that by going against the rule to help an Alpha member, making them dependent on others. “Why am I even arguing with you.” Miyrah focused her thoughts on the front of the room she was heading towards.

One minute she was in front of Skylar who was reaching out to stop her and the next she was in front of Destiny Andales room.

Lilith Bailey was being kept awake by guilt and whenever she felt guilty she got uncontrollable cravings. Getting out of bed she began pacing her room trying to ignore the stabs of pain within her stomach. “What’s the point in having powers if they can’t protect those you care for?” Lilith thought stopping to stare out her window.

It was pitch black outside, but she knew somewhere out there they were watching, waiting for the right time to strike. Lilith’s stomach growled louder and she finally couldn’t take it anymore. Opening her door Lilith bumped into Verdana leader of the Alpha Twos. “Did Trevor’s pleas of mercy keep you up?” Verdana sneered upon seeing her.

“Your really asking for me to rip your heart out and feed it to you aren’t you?” Lilith responded.

“Your sick.”

“I’ve been told worse.” Lilith said pushing pass her and heading towards the kitchen.

Verdana followed in her wake. “I really can’t believe Trevor passed up a chance to be an elder to be with a bitch like you. He was too good for you. He would still be here if it weren’t for you.”

Spinning around Lilith pushed Verdana up against the wall and reached inside her chest. “You know Verdana you really have some nerve calling me a bitch after all of the things you‘ve done.” Lilith said closing her hand around Verdana’s heart. Verdana sucked in a breath and her heartbeat began to quicken. “Trevor saw people for who they really were and I love and respected him for that. Which would explain why he chose me over you even in the end. If anyone feels worst about what happened to him, its me.”

“Funny I didn’t know a heartless person could feel bad. Its been a year and not once has anyone seen you mourn. If that’s your idea of love and respect I hate to see what happens to someone you hate and disrespect.” Verdana sputtered.

“Would you like to find out?” Lilith asked beginning to pull the heart from its spot.

“Lilith I need your help.” Miyrah’s voice said within her head.

“Now.” Lilith answered back enjoying the expression displayed on Verdana’s face as her heart was being pulled farther from the center on her body, slowly and agonizingly.

“It’s Des.”

Lilith heaved a sigh and stopped the hearts progress. “I’m coming.”

Looking at Verdana Lilith punched the heart back in place and placed her back on her feet before taking her hand out of her chest. Gasping for breath and clutching her heart Verdana fell to the floor. “If you’d really like to know the answer to that question wait until I find those things that entered our base.” Lilith said bending down to wipe her bloody hand on Verdana’s face before heading to Destiny’s room.

“I’ll make sure you’re kicked off of Alpha Team permanently.” Verdana yelled before staggering back to her feet and wobbling to Nehelenia’s quarters.

Lia Rae Johnson was having trouble falling asleep as well this night. Something always seemed to go wrong this day; the anniversary. From 12 midnight till the first rays of light which came around 10 in the morning some tragedy always befell them. Last year the bastards had decided to strike early costing her and her friends the loves of their lives. She wouldn’t have been surprised if she wasn’t the only one up and on ends. Every time she closed her eyes she was reminded of all the things this day signified. As usual when ever she worried she paced and when she paced her unconscious mind levitated her off the ground and the objects in her room began to circle her, creating a mini solar system with her as the sun. “Why in the world did I ever agree to this? Maybe if I had chosen the other path I would have been spared so much grief. He tried to warn me, but I just wouldn’t listen.”

Lia grabbed a picture that had flown in front of her. The picture showed her, Lilith, Destiny, and Miyrah at their commemoration for Alpha Twos way before the first tragedy had hit. “We had so many hopes for the future, I wonder if they feel just as bad about everything that has happened as I do?” Lia knew it was one of the things they would never really sit down and talk about. An unspoken agreement had been made to never speak of the past when all four had ventured upon this path.

Lia was brought out her thoughts when a shaking from the next room broke her of her concentration and she fell to the bed with everything around her falling to the ground. “What the…” Lia rolled off her bed as she realized what the shaking was. “Not again.”

Getting up from her bed she opened her bedroom door where she found Felix hovering around. She tried to close the door again before he noticed her, but was too late. “Hey Lia I was hoping I would run into you.” Felix said when he noticed her.

“I bet you were.” Lia thought trying to find a way to escape without seeming rude. “Felix what are you doing here, in front of my room, again.”

“I just wanted to see if you gave anymore thought to my question.”

“Gee you’ve asked me so many questions in the last week I don’t know what question your referring to.” Lia answered summoning a lampshade into her hand just in case he tried another one of his moves.

“The one about accompanying me to the victory celebration after the war.”

“Yeah about that, your nice and everything, but I’m not ready to move on with that part of my life yet, sorry.”

“Oh, yeah, I should of guessed, maybe later when your ready.” Felix turned to leave, but stopped momentarily. Lia raised the lampshade ready to use it if need be. “I’ll guess I’ll see you around.” Felix said and wandered down the hall to his quarters.

Lia sighed in relief as she returned the lampshade back to its proper place. Oh I don’t have any doubt in my mind, you’ll find some way to see me around.

Exiting out of her room Lia headed towards Destiny’s room, where she found Miyrah and Lilith already trying to figure out how to approach the situation inside. “So who’s turn is it to get fried this time?” Lia asked as she joined them. In answer each of the girls pointed at the other, not wanting to be the one to enter and calm their colleague down. "Well whatever we do we better do it fast, we only have a couple hours before we go to war."
