Sun leaked between the buildings. It shined on the people who had different shades of blackness. They had begun private equity companies. They took it seriously in the fact that they would take struggling companies and turn them profitable again. That meant layoffs and firings.

“They already hate that we’re black businesspeople,” Yindo Suitton acknowledged. “They think we’re ‘bougie.’ The white man didn’t give us these businesses. We raised them by ourselves. We kept rising higher and higher while they stagnated. Well, now we’re going to step in and liquidate.”

Selma Meyer grinned. “We can certainly make more money, sir.”
