"The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window." Rae said to Nef mindlessly, her eyes as if staring out into the void
"Woah woah woah." Nef said loudly, her voice piercing the dark night and bringing Rae back to the present.
"This is the cabin your parents bought? Why the living hell would you buy a cabin that has a random candle? obviously there are squatters!"
Rae sighed and tossed a marshmallow at Nef's head, "Shut up and listen!" she grumbled
"The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. My mother had been hiking all day, when she stumbled across the old dilapidated building, it was getting dark, cold, and drops of rain had started spotting the dirt at her feet, she new she needed shelter." Rae looked off into the distance, "Against her better judgement, she approached the steps, hollering out a pleasant 'hello' incase anyone was in the cabin. As her feet stepped on the stoop, the front door creaked open, but not a soul in the doorway to great her."
Nef grabbed another log and tossed it on the fire, sparks fluttered up to the sky, illuminating the long lost in space face of her friend.
"Wait, didn't your mom die or something? Like years ago?"
"I said shut up!"
"Ok ok, jeez testy much, I'm just trying to make sense of the timeline."
Rae rolled her eyes and grabbed a bag of chips from the basket, "Yes my mom died years ago, I was a mere child when this happened, ok??? Happy now? CAN I CONTINUE!?"
Nef raised her hands in surrender and Rae continued,
"My mom stepped into the darkness, calling out again for who ever opened the door. Just as luck would have it, once she was safe under the roof, the downpour started, and lighting streaked across the sky. Every now and again a flash would light up the cabin so she could get a basic sense of the layout. It seemed as if, whoever lived there had just up and left. The smell of rotting food and mold infiltrated her nose, but her choices were to stay there, or try to seek another shelter in the storm. She new her chances were best in the cabin, but something in her told her otherwise. Slipping her bag off her shoulders, she dug around for a flash light, and clicked it on. Leaving her bag on the floor, she started roaming around, the table was still set for what appeared to be a family of four, beds still made, and tattered clothing still in the drawers. Mice had obviously found those to be wonderful homes. Pictures sat still on the walls, holding up the peeling wallpaper, they didn't seem that old to her. After a bit, she was getting cold, and found next to an old fireplace a small wood pile, she had pulled out her lighter, found some paper, and a small hatchet by the wood, made some kindling and started a fire, the instant light and warmth was a comforting feeling, but the shadows had the opposite effect. As she sat in an old chair by the fire, slowly starting to doze off, a voice rang in the building and startled her awake. Help she heard meekly, she stood up 'Hello??' she called out Help me! Up here! she sprinted to the stairs continuing to call out, running down the hall way and throwing open every door, screaming for whoever was there to come out. She finally reached the last bedroom at the end of the hall, she pushed open the door and peered in, the room was obviously set up for a young girl, dolls and toys littered the floor, and the bed didn't have a speck of dust on it. You came! a small voice from behind said, as mom spun around, before her stood a small girl, her dress seemed to be something from the past, much older than the pictures around the house. Mom new that instant something was wrong, as the girl was almost transparent. The young girl smiled at mom, and threw her hands open as if to embrace her, the door slammed shut locking mom in the room with the girl as darkness surrounded her."
Nef stared at Rae in disbelief as she continued,
"The next day, my father was out looking for mom. Seeing the cabin, he figured she would have sought out shelter from the storm, and approached. There was a single candle, in the window of a girls bedroom upstairs lit. My father thought maybe my mom was up there, so he entered calling her name, seeing her bag on the floor, and the remnants of a fire in the fireplace, he started running upstairs, screaming for mom to come out, but he never found her."
"Wait, if your mom was gone, how do you now all of this?" Nef cut in
Rae looked at Nef, and in a brief moment her eyes blinked black, and then back to there bright blue, "What?"
