**"Quantum Breach"**

"A Lone Engineer's Fight to Save Humanity's Last Hope"

By AbbasPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Jaxon stared out of the small window of the spaceship, the vastness of the universe stretching infinitely in every direction. The mission had been clear from the start: travel to Proxima Centauri b, establish a foothold for humanity’s future, and ensure the survival of the human race.

The journey had been long, with the crew in cryosleep for most of the voyage. Automated systems managed the ship, keeping everything on course while the crew slumbered. But something had gone wrong. The ship had woken Jaxon too early, years ahead of schedule.

Jaxon shook off the grogginess of cryosleep and made their way to the control room. The ship’s AI, VAL-9, greeted them with its usual calm, robotic voice.

“Good morning, Commander Jaxon. How can I assist you today?”

“Why did you wake me up, VAL? We’re still years away from Proxima Centauri b.”

“There is a malfunction in the ship’s propulsion system,” VAL replied, its tone emotionless. “The quantum drive is experiencing instability. I required human intervention to assess and correct the issue.”

Jaxon’s heart sank. The quantum drive was the heart of the ship, a complex piece of technology that allowed them to travel faster than light.

“How bad is it?” Jaxon asked, trying to keep their voice steady.

“The quantum drive’s containment field is degrading at an accelerated rate,” VAL explained. “If not repaired, the drive will breach in approximately 72 hours, resulting in catastrophic failure.”

Jaxon’s mind raced. They were the only one awake, the only one who could fix this. But the quantum drive was a delicate, intricate system—one wrong move, and the entire ship could be torn apart.

“VAL, run a diagnostic on the drive and give me the most probable cause of the containment failure.”

“Running diagnostic now. Estimated time: 30 minutes.”

As VAL worked, Jaxon floated over to the maintenance locker and pulled out the repair kit. They tried to steady their nerves, but the weight of the situation was pressing down on them like a physical force.

VAL’s voice broke the silence. “Diagnostic complete. The containment failure is due to microfractures in the drive’s core. These fractures are spreading and will soon reach critical levels.”

“Is there a way to repair it?” Jaxon asked, though they already knew the answer.

“There is a 22% chance that a manual repair of the fractures could stabilize the core. However, the procedure is highly dangerous. Exposure to the core during the repair could be lethal.”

Jaxon closed their eyes, taking a deep breath. They had no choice. It was either risk everything or let the mission—and humanity’s future—fail.

“I’m going in,” Jaxon said, strapping on the protective suit and securing the repair kit to their belt.

The journey to the drive core felt like the longest walk of Jaxon’s life. The corridors of the ship, usually a place of safety, now felt like a tomb.

Jaxon approached the core, hands steady despite the fear gnawing at their insides. As they began the delicate work of sealing the fractures, the ship groaned around them, metal creaking as the drive fought to maintain stability.

Sweat dripped down Jaxon’s face inside the suit, their breath loud in the enclosed space. Time seemed to stretch as they worked, each moment filled with the possibility of failure.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the last fracture was sealed. The core’s pulsating slowed, the light stabilizing into a steady, reassuring glow. Jaxon collapsed against the wall, exhausted but alive.

“Repair complete,” VAL reported, its voice calm as ever. “Containment field is stabilizing. The ship is safe.”

Jaxon let out a breath they didn’t realize they were holding, relief flooding through them. They had done it. The mission could continue. But as they floated back to the crew quarters, they couldn’t shake the lingering dread.
