Post Storm Dinner
Challenge #2 Tag You’re It!

As part of James & Oneg’s Summer Writing Challenge Extravaganza, we present to you the Tag You’re It! Challenge.
Pick a Vocal community and tag/nominate another writer to write a poem or 100-word micro fic about it BUT you only have 15 minutes to write!
I was tagged with the FAMILIES community by Cathy holmes.
The clink of cutlery against plates barely masked the deafening silence of the dinner orchestration. Fork on the left, knife on the right, plate in the middle. Mom on the left, dad on the right, me in the middle. But how can you be in the middle if one side is missing?
Mom mindlessly stirred the pot of overcooked spaghetti, the red of tomato triggering a stained crimson memory from the previous terror-filled night. She took another sip from the half empty wine glass.
Our home felt half empty too.
Who would have thought that I would miss the yelling?

I chose to write about the complicated parts of family, the one you usually try to hide. I made it a bit of a drama (maybe crime) twist too oops.
But the point is, is that families can be messy. Families can be hard. We always talk and hear about how families are always there for you, but sometimes they aren’t. And sometimes you don’t want them to be.

"But how can you be in the middle if one side is missing?" Volumes in that one sentence. Love (with a horrified grimace) this piece.
WOW! Brilliant work Oneg!
🫣🫣🫣. Eeeeeek! Imagining the scenarios 😬😬
Nicely done, atmosphere aptly captured.
Wow!! So much story in that micro piece. Excellent response to Cathy's tag!!
This is amazing, Oneg! In such a short timespan, you made amazing connections between the place settings and the dynamics of a family, with such a thought-provoking question!
Oh damn! My bro is right. So much said in so few words. Excellent. Do I really have to publish mine now? lol
Wow! This is great. You said so much in so few words.
Damn, Oneg! What a terrifying micro fic! I love it!
