Pixie was the laziest and most conceited cat around. Pixie’s master, Darryl, owned a restaurant and Pixie was always fed the leftovers customers left. Pixie usually would lie down curled up in a blanket all day. Only time he left the house was to taunt rodents that tried to show up at the restaurant. Pixie felt he had life made. Darryl however never showed Pixie much affection. Sure he groomed him, fed him and provided him a place, but Darryl seldom paid much attention to Pixie. Pixie did not know that it bothered him but deep down the cat’s heart he was starved to live a more full life. But for the moment Pixie treasured life and believed he lived perfectly. Until the day when everything he wanted was taken away.
There came a time when a new restaurant opened up not far from Darryl’s restaurant. For months The Seahorse-Darryl’s restaurant-suffered a severe lack of customers. Darryl tried to give discounts but ended up losing the customers anyways. He worried that if this persisted he would go bankrupt. Stressed by all this, he took a drive with Pixie in the car. When he came to an alley, he forced Pixie out of the car and drove away.
Pixie was shocked by this. However he figured his master would come back soon. However he hated how dark the alley was and had realized that he had not eaten dinner. Nowadays the food he was given was far less due to fewer customers. Pixie figured it was not time to worry yet. He did not know the least bit about foraging for food. He had never eaten out of a garbage and while he had tormented rodents, he had never hurt one. After waiting a few hours for his master, Pixie fell asleep. He awoke sometime in the morning feeling incredibly hungry and thirsty.
Pixie did not know what to do. He needed to eat and drink. He decided to wander around in alley and soon found a puddle of water which he lapped up eagerly. However he was incredibly hungry. Just then out of the corner of one of his eyes he spotted a tiny mouse. Pixie had never hunted but stalked sneakily behind the mouse. Just inches away he reached a paw ready to kill his prey but something made him pause. He looked down at the mouse and saw how tiny it was. Not only that, the mouse was crying.
Suddenly Pixie forgot his hunger. Compassion he had never felt before seeped through him like a fountain. For the first time in his life, he thought of another being. He stayed quiet for a bit until he got the nerve to ask the mouse what was wrong. The mouse replied that he was following his mommy and had got lost. Pixie wasted no time in replying that while weak from hunger, he would let the mouse ride him home.
In an hour the baby mouse returned home. His mother through tears told Pixie how grateful she was. When asked how he could be repaid, Pixie burst into tears. Pixie told his story and how he was afraid of being alone. Mother Mouse told Pixie he could stay with her. There was one condition, Pixie would have to scavenge for food the way mice always did. And while Pixie did not live a ritzy life like before, he finally had something he wanted-love.
Pixie knew where he could get food as his old life revolved around being in a restaurant. He would go to the back of the restaurant where the dumpster was and feast. After several days doing this he decided it would be best if he also brought food for his new family. Every day he would forage for food and gather enough for mother mouse and her baby. He did this for a month until he decided it was time to give back.
Pixie now brings food to stray cats and mice everywhere. Hew knows he can't give them everything like shelter and stability but he feels by giving them food he is at least showing the compassion he lacked in life at a younger age.
