On that fateful day, the cascading rain drenched the valiant sailors aboard the vessel, enveloping the atmosphere with an overwhelming sense of bewilderment. The imminent peril of their boat’s capsizing loomed ominously, as colossal waves soared to extraordinary heights of over 90 feet, accompanied by turbulent winds that ruthlessly roared at a minimum velocity of 80 miles per hour. Abruptly, the ill-fated ship succumbed to the depths, and tragically, all souls traveling met a sorrowful demise.
With a steadfast determination, the whirlwind pushed forward relentlessly, sparing no mercy as it traced its direction along the coastline. A grip of panic and desolation engulfed the formerly serene seaside community of Neptune, leaving numerous blameless individuals, including the most vulnerable of them all – innocent children – trapped amidst the chaos. In the face of an unforgiving gust, a young maiden named Lilly stood unwavering, casting her discerning gaze across the expanse in search of her parents. Clutching her dearest companion, a plush teddy bear, she valiantly defied the deluge, resolute in her refusal to succumb to bereavement.
Alas, a pang of sorrow infiltrated her tender heart as her adored home, her playground, and school fell victim to the tempest’s might. Tears mingled with the rainfall, tracing their delicate path upon her countenance as she beheld the havoc with her untainted eyes. Once a vibrant haven pulsating with vivacity, this sanctuary now lay wounded, fragmented, and bereft of vitality. This outcome was derived from a significant occurrence that transpired twenty years ago.
Calypso, a graceful mermaid, possessed a refined fin that granted her the ability to traverse land with the grace of a dancer. During the nights, she strolled the shorelines, serenading melodies that emanated from her lips, while gathering seashells. Over time, her collection transformed into treasure, as her companions eagerly sought after the hairpins and exquisite jewelry that she meticulously fashioned from these oceanic gems.
Marshall had dedicated his entire being to the noble profession of a sailor. Led by the whims of the wind, he fearlessly journeyed throughout the boundless recess of the sea. Yet, it was during a fleeting pause at a humble harbor to discharge goods and replenish provisions that his existence encountered an unforeseen twist.
Ascending to the esteemed rank of captain presented him with the opportunity to venture forth and discover the coastlines, an encounter that would indelibly shape the course of his destiny.
While wandering the beach during his expedition, Marshall’s attention was taken by a distant figure. Her alluring presence enticed him, as her hair radiated a celestial tapestry beneath the soft glow of the moon. The exchange of their gaze forged an indescribable connection that transcended comprehension. It felt as though fate itself had conspired to unite them, effortlessly erasing any boundaries that could have separated them.
Calypso’s irresistible charm and voice left the skipper utterly entranced, unable to resist her. In each other’s company, they would embark on coastal escapades, intertwining their aspirations, reveling in laughter, and engrossed in the art of storytelling.
Their journey would lead them to secret caves adorned with resplendent corals, where they would glide through the underwater realms. Unfazed by the unconventional nature of his affection, he embraced his adoration for his mermaid, for the world she revealed to him was nothing short of an earthly utopia.
On the eve of Marshalls’ ship setting sail, they were engaged in a heartfelt farewell, sharing kisses beneath the starlit sky. Unfortunately, their romantic moment was disrupted by a group of inebriated fishermen who subjected the couple to harassment.
Despite the Captain’s valiant efforts to protect his beloved, he found himself overpowered by the number and strength of their assailants. As a result, the tranquility of the night was shattered, leaving a lingering sense of injustice and sorrow.
The following day, Calypso found herself reclined upon the golden shores, cradling the lifeless body of Marshall, marred by bruises and stained with blood. In that poignant moment, she made a solemn promise to refrain from entangling her existence with humans ever again.
Summoning every ounce of her fortitude, she tenderly kissed her beloved, whispering, “I will always love you.” And with that, she gracefully dissolved into the depths of the sea.
A significant amount of time later, Calypso brought forth a precious child, named Maryrose. As the days turned into months, Calypso’s intense fury and anguish engulfed her entire existence, instilling deep-seated disdain towards the human race within her daughter.
Day by day, her burning desire for retribution intensified with unwavering zeal. The once enchanting mermaid transformed into a barren expanse of despair. Calypso, in her wisdom, urged her daughter to unleash her righteous wrath upon unsuspecting seafarers and anglers, delighting in the havoc wrought and relishing the anguish inflicted upon them.
The very shadows she had willingly embraced now devoured her essence, like a venomous serpent corrupting both her thoughts and physical being. In her descent into insanity, she grew feeble and diminished, burdened by the weight of her boundless fury. Unbeknownst to her, the obscurity she had willingly welcomed became her downfall.
The dagger, once a symbol of her quest for revenge, now became her nemesis. Its glow twisted, reflecting the profound darkness that had engulfed her. In a final act of retaliation, Calypso turned her gaze towards her own heart, longing for release from the immense anguish and desolation that had consumed her entirety.
With her lifeless body freed from the animosity that once depleted her, she sought solace in this ultimate self-sacrifice.
Maryrose now possessed a profound hatred towards mankind, surpassing even her mother. Consumed by a potent mix of fury and sorrow, she resolved to exact retribution upon the human realm for the afflictions endured by her beloved parent. Driven by her determination to shield her kin from the horrors witnessed by Calypso, she embarked upon a solemn quest to submerge every vessel that dared to traverse the seas.
With a prowess that outshone even her mothers, she ascended to a realm of unparalleled might, for her disdain towards humanity burgeoned like a festering affliction. Driven by an unbending thirst for reprisal, Maryrose cultivated a sinister and ruinous force concealed within her resplendent orange tail.
The seas quivered under the weight of her fury, as she summoned typhoons to engulf the vessels of any sailors who dared approach her domain. Unmoved by the innocent souls aboard each ship, all she sensed was an ardent yearning for her own brand of justice.
With a cunning grin, and persistence ignited within her soul, she would entice seafarers by employing her bewitching melodies to allure them toward their fateful demise. As vessels approached, Maryrose would harness the mighty power of the ocean, unleashing torrents of devastation upon them, and propelling their vessels into the merciless abyss below.
The news of the “Orange-Tailed Tempest,” as they called her, spread rapidly among sailors. Fear overwhelmed them as rumors of her devastating strength circulated in taverns and seaports. Numerous sailors and fishermen delayed their journeys or completely abandoned their ships, unwilling to risk encountering her fury.
On a fateful evening, as the sun was setting, the serene water resonated with the sound of wood cracking. Maryrose noticed an imposing ship approaching, adorned with the emblem of the vessel that the man who had tormented her mother served on. Her anger overwhelmed her, compelling her to unleash her fury upon the unsuspecting men. As her fiery orange tail propelled her forward, she created a massive storm that filled the air, and Maryrose reveled in the chaos she had caused as the screams mixed with the sound of wood crashing.
Maryrose’s vengeful fury slightly diminished as she turned up. She directed her gaze towards the violently lapping waves that surrounded her. At that moment, Maryrose locked eyes with the man who had assaulted her mother, causing her wrath to unleash its vengeful whip without realizing the consequences of her chosen path. The storm, showing no mercy, moved to land and wreaked havoc along the coast.
Lilly came across a small boat that was left stranded on the shoreline, with its old wooden frame damaged and worn. Despite feeling afraid, she found the strength to climb onto it, driven by remnants of hope that led her every step. In order to locate her parents, she knew she had to stay resilient.
The young girl was caught in the grasp of an undertow, causing Maryrose to feel conflicted as she watched the girl desperately clinging to life. Curiosity, mixed with pity, gripped Maryrose’s heart. Although her vengeance demanded that she should have left the girl to drown, a glimmer of compassion took hold, prompting her to save the human instead.
By her own choice, Maryrose came back to the surface. While the girl held onto the back of Maryrose, her tears mixed with the salty seawater. After the storm, as sunlight pierced through the clouds, she found an island devastated by her relentless fury.
Lilly spoke about her family, her dreams, and the hope that had been shattered by Maryrose’s anger. At that moment, the mermaid became aware of the extensive repercussions of her actions. Her pursuit driven by revenge had not alleviated her own pain, nor had it justified the pain she had caused to others.
