From 'Clouds in the Summer' Chapter 1
Chapter 1
“What's up?” Oakley answers the phone.
“You have a gift package out here. Want me to bring it in?”
“Uh, yeah. Thanks."
“Awesome."

Oakley places the gift on the coffee table. "I don't know what this is.”
"I don't always remember what I ordered either” Jay says. “Maybe it's a promo. So did you hear that Harmony left?”
“No.” He turns his back to put away his dishes.
“Well I just heard it from her cousin. I wasn’t sure if you’d be affected by it."
“Whatever. You know I’m not.” A white corner beneath the bow catches Oakley’s eye as he checks to see if there’s a note. He removes a loose photo, and his expression darkens. He places the photo facedown.
"What is it?”
“Nothing important.” He picks up the box and places it inside a cabinet. ''Unmute the T.V.''

I love this piece
Wow, I've been very excited about reading this first chapter! To extend your own sporting metaphor, I love this game of two halves. The contrast drawn between its male and female components, divided pretty much exactly down the middle, is masterfully done. In the prelude I wasn't sure I liked the sound of Oakley, but I see now he was well-suited for an artist such as Harmony. This is evident from how different he is to Josh, the picture of prosaic masculinity, who I doubt has ever had a creative stirring in his life! I love it too that even while Harmony is so far away, she works her influence on both these men through the tantalizing gift she left Oak. Even Josh, who seems to base his life around food and sports and physical pleasure, is curious about this somehow ineffably feminine mystery. The women on the other hand are so alive, so quirky, and so colourfully real! Their half of the story abounds with humour and anecdote and life, which strikes the reader all the more after the reserved friendship and terse Hemingway dialogue of the two men (plus, we suspect, a certain degree of projected self-image in Josh's case at least). Harmony, Genevieve and Kat feel like people we could meet and like, and they're truly relatable even when read about on screen. And of course, along with this superb characterization, the plot ticks along nicely and we wonder where these diverse and disparate lives are headed. Back to each other again? Superb stuff, Starlight! By the way, I live in Lincoln City, UK! Nice to read a reference to Birmingham too, where I was last week, and although I've never been to Cambridge, Oxford's great. Lastly, if you like cheerleading as much as Genevieve did, you may enjoy some of my latest posts!
very good
