Modern Times
βIt was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.β
The clocks weren't really striking thirteen, it was just that all the clocks were out of sequence and the public heard thirteen, fourteen or even fifteen chimes.
No one knew what time it was, society had fallen apart and was now ruled and controlled by unelected unsupervised Government Goon Squads.
Everyone was knocked up around dawn each morning and escorted to the workhouse where their job was to fix the items put in front of them.
They were fed gruel, because there were no shops to get food any more. Food became so expensive and wages had been reduced to zero because people were charged for escort to and from work, renting their desks and the gruel, and deductions were more than the wage which meant that people were owned by the company/government with no hope of the situation changing.
Money went into offshore tax havens and productivity was zero.
No children were being born, everyone had been sterilised "to save money".
As people died the workforce and population got smaller and workhouses were closed.
Then the day came that all that was left was the Government Goon Squads.
With no one to control they turned on each other and soon they were gone.
The rich were in their ivory towers but soon they were getting no food, and despite having huge offshore accounts they joined the rest of the population and starvation took them.
As the rich starved it was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.

As bleak as Orwell, Mike and a suitable entry for the challenge.
I love this piece. Excellent storytelling.
Sad, but true. A good cautionary tale.
I can see this happening to us. Loved your story!
What a great story. I read '1984' several times. So Big Brother is still hanging in there. I really hope not.
Sounds like the future we may bea headed for. Well done, my friend.
