Marooned
A Fiction

I don't know what happened, but I am on an island of stone. There is no sandy beach, no trees, no plants, and no fresh water.
This is desolation.
In a few days, I will die of thirst as well become hungrier. I look to the horizon, but every direction is nothing but water. I could swim, but which way?
I have nothing to make a fire, even if a plane or a boat came by, so my only option is to swim, but I know that without a float to hold on to, I will tire and drown.
What to do? This is Hobson's Choice, which is no choice at all.
If I stay, I die (unless someone comes by and rescues me).
If I swim, I drown, unless I make landfall where I can find fresh water and food.
I don't know how I got here, but that doesn't matter.
I have to make a choice, and I don't want to take any of the options.
What should I do?
Only I can answer that.....

I hate making choices this hard🏆💙🏆
An interesting conundrum. Seems to me he is screwed either way, so which is the quickest would be my decision.
And here I thought this was going to be an entry into the utopia challenge, lol.
Neither option is desirable, that is for sure
This is a story on how to make an impossible choice. Good job.
So in retrospect Sophia’s choice was a ‘Hobson’ correct? I like that that I just learned something.
I learned about Hobson’s choice in a college class that I took many years ago—it’s when you only have one real option, like now: stay and die, or swim and maybe die. This was great!
I love this one, Mike. Fascinating. I actually spent some time thinking what I would do. I concluded I would probably die trying to find a solution. Interesting this illusion of free choice was originated in Cambridge as well. I also listened to song. I think the music as background matched the story - I didn’t pay attention to the lyrics since I was reading. I assumed they had nothing to do with story. But you got inspiration from this song or picked the music after writing the story? Just curious about the story behind the story. 😁
I enjoyed this! I'd never heard of Hobson's choice before, so I learnt something knew today.
I've never heard of Hobsons choice. I appreciate you sharing that link. Loved your story!
