Makisig and the Laughing Balete Tree

An Enchanting Tale of Wit and Wonder

By Mishelle GPublished 3 years ago 2 min read

Once upon a time, deep in the lush forests of the Philippines, there lived a mischievous monkey named Makisig. Makisig was known for his cleverness and quick wit. One sunny morning, as he swung from tree to tree, he stumbled upon a small clearing where a group of animals had gathered.

In the center of the clearing stood a majestic old tree known as the Balete tree. Its branches stretched out like arms, and its roots twisted and turned, creating intricate patterns on the ground. The animals were in awe of the tree's beauty and strength.

The wise old turtle, Tagapangalaga, spoke up, "Dear friends, this Balete tree is said to possess magical powers. It is believed that whoever can make the tree laugh will be granted a wish. However, no one has succeeded so far."

Makisig, intrigued by the challenge, eagerly stepped forward. "I will make the Balete tree laugh," he declared confidently.

The other animals exchanged skeptical glances, but Makisig was determined to prove himself. He climbed up the branches of the tree until he reached a comfortable perch. Taking a deep breath, he began to dance and sing, making funny faces and telling jokes.

The animals watched as Makisig entertained the tree with his antics, but the Balete tree remained silent, its branches still and its leaves unmoving. Makisig's confidence began to waver, but he refused to give up.

Suddenly, an idea struck him. He swung down from the tree and approached the old turtle. "Tagapangalaga, do you have any red chili peppers?" he asked.

The turtle nodded and handed him a few chili peppers. Makisig climbed back up the tree and gently placed the peppers on the tree's branches. Then, he whispered to the tree, "Balete, do you know what the birds say about you? They say you're so hot, even chili peppers can't handle your fiery spirit!"

The animals watched in anticipation as the tree's branches trembled, and a soft chuckle echoed through the clearing. The Balete tree had laughed!

Makisig's wish was granted, and he asked for the ability to communicate with all animals in the forest. From that day forward, Makisig became the animals' messenger, bridging the gap between them and helping to maintain peace and harmony.

The fable of Makisig and the Balete tree spread throughout the land, reminding everyone of the power of wit, persistence, and the importance of laughter. And deep in the heart of the forest, the Balete tree stood as a reminder of the day it shared a laugh with a clever monkey.
