Lost In My Library
From A Vocal Resource Prompt

Introduction
I don't think I have ever used one of Vocal's prompts from their resources. I know I use their challenges as prompts but that is different. They have lots of jumping-off points for poetry, stories and articles and if you are stuck then they really are worthwhile to look into, although I know Creators who find things like that too much trouble.
So I dropped into a couple and then it was a case of done that, done that, done that and I dropped into this and found a starting line that has given me an idea.
Unbelievable the first one they give you is:
"It was a dark and stormy night..."
Which is the title of this book of some of the worst writing committed to print.
The music is "The Book I Read" by The Talking Heads
So here is my story with a Vocal opening line
Lost In My Library
"The book had been sitting on the shelf for years, but today I decided to open it..."
I have so many books in my house and the main room is effectively a library, full of books that I have never read, but many that I have. When I visit friends and other people's houses that are full of books I do wonder:
"What have they actually read?"
But this is my house and this book is one that I bought for some reason or other and just put it on my bookcase with my other books and there it stayed. It is the same with music and videos, but I console myself with the thought that I have supported the artist or creator with my money so at least someone has benefitted from my purchase.
I have so many, but for some reason, I took this one out. It was like the book, or the author was calling me almost transcendentally. I opened the book and from the initial map and the first line I was transported into another world, full of magic and I knew I would be in this world for some time.
The words set something off in my mind and it was like something had been awakened. I was seeing colours I had never known existed and hearing sounds both soothing and disconcerting.
This was just one book in my library and showed me that I had many worlds to explore and experience. I love to travel and see things every day and know there are many wonders in our world, but this was another world that was revealing itself to me.
Each step I took drew me further into this world of magic. There was a gravel path through a green forest. Birds sang and creatures skittered, as I wandered.
I thought I saw human forms in the forest, but were the fae or something darker? Could they see me and were they friendly or a threat?
My journey had hardly started, and I thought of the time that I had wasted by not opening this book and many others in my collection.
Books should not just be for decoration, although I have been in pubs where the wallpaper is book spines, making them out to be pretend book-lovers, although that is only one step back from those who fill their shelves to impress rather than read.
So I will wander through this world and discover and experience magic no doubt and may even share it with you on my return to real life, and what will those things be? Do you want me to tell you?
Conclusion
See that CD that you have never played or that DVD you have never watched, or that book on your shelf that you have never read? Take it now and find out what you have been missing.
Thank you for reading

I think Vocal has had some great prompts. From one, I’ve started a novel, from another I would like to write one and from one prompt I have a totally spooky unfinished short story that I didn’t finish it time to enter in a challenge.
I love how you jumped into fantasy! Just like reading said books!
It's always the ones that we don't read/watch that surprises us the most. Really loved the concept you used here!
Nice nice, well done.
