A Charm of Finches
You can’t comprehend isolation until you’ve lived on an island in the middle of nowhere. In the beginning, I don’t think I understood the reality of it. A naïve American ornithologist who fell in love with the idea of this brilliant, tropical place and had forgotten the fact that The Galapagos are harsh and unforgiving to those who are not fit to survive. Shortly after my arrival to Santa Cruz, I was introduced by a local friend to one of the town elders, another American who told me about how he came when he was twenty, how unbelievably tough it was working in a village where there were slim pickings in terms of a menu, no doctors, no plumbers, and little communication with the outside world. He told me how they partied whenever they could, that made me smile. He also told me that even the best survivalists could die and disappear out in the wilderness. I kind of shrugged and promised I wouldn’t go out there.

New World
No one took the news reports seriously. I didn’t either honestly. Not until it happened. All my life I’d heard reports of NASA saying asteroids were headed for our planet. Bigger ones always missed, so it makes sense that no one believed one as massive as the one that hit was on a direct course to hit us. Luckily for me, one of my best friends had a father, who was a huge doomsday prepper. Kaley and I made fun of it alot but to be honest, the bunker he built under their backyard was pretty cool. It had 5 different floors and was like a maze. We played hide and go seek down there everyday when we were kids. We’d have sleepovers in there and even claimed our rooms just in case anything ever did actually happen but we never really believed it would.

Juliet
You never think the worst will happen until it happens. Sure, people say they imagine the worst all the time, but the image of “the worst” that they have in their minds is a watered-down, Hollywood version, the world being ravaged by unrealistically mild climate change or blown to bits by a meteor or suffering from some other stereotypically apocalyptic scenario. Nothing they could dream up to mull over in the still hours before they fall asleep at night or the quiet length of their morning commute could ever compare to the real thing.

The Door
They were chasing me. Faster than ever before. So, I had to be faster. My bare feet were being torn apart by the forest floor, but I only let the pain fuel me. That combined with my pure terror made me nearly unstoppable. Nearly. I focused my gaze up ahead to the clearing in the trees, trying to figure out the next path I’d take. But this time, there was only one. Straight to the edge of a cliff. I nearly tumbled over it as I neared it, but my body halted before I could take another step. I was frozen in fear as I peered down over the edge into the black abyss. I felt the frigid ocean air hit my face, nearly sweeping me onto my back. An icy death, that’s where this path leads me. I turned my head towards the forest, searching for any sign of the beasts that forced me here. I heard not a peep, but I didn’t need to. The scent of them filled my nose. They smelled like a rotting corpse and that smell of decay was only getting closer by the minute. I turn my back to them and place my right foot forward. Towards the edge. A second later, my left foot as well. I repeated this until I found my toes were gripping the cliffs ragged sharp edges. The pain piercing in my feet made the reality of my situation all that more apparent. It wasn’t a choice of life or death now. But would I die by their hands or my own.

18
“18” “Everything is always flickering...always static-y...always quiet..or always too loud! I hate it dad” Malachi took the tattered doll out of this bag and sat quietly in the back of the humvee as it bumped and jostled down the pothole ridden road. Damon could not disagree with his son but continued to look outside the dirty window obscuring his agreement as he tried his best to come up with comforting words to placate his son for what seems like the 1 millionth time since they started their trip. “ 10 hours left tho.”

Cosmic Annie
Erika Garcia's wildest dreams finally came true, and she couldn't have been more miserable. "Just give it until sunset." Dr. Tsuchihara grunted on the other end of the phone. Erika looked out the window of her apartment; a palace compared to the musty closet she leased only a few days prior.

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished
“It’s been three days” A shuffle and a slap of flesh struck the concrete. Everything was cold and wet; honestly, I wouldn’t mind the cold if it weren’t for the constant drip of water that leaked from the ceiling every five minutes. I could almost predict when it would trail across those rusty pipes and fall against my head. Drip. Drip. A shiver trailed across my back. There was always the option to sit somewhere more dry. But those cold drops of water were a reminder that I am still alive and aware.
