'The river ran backwards on the day the Queen vanished.'

The story starts here:

Kongaray: The Final Encounter

The two returned, shattered but with the bloodied Scimitars safe, blooded, bloodied and blessed.

The group gathered together once more in the library to decide which champions would fight Kongaray. Volunteers would be preferred but they did not think they could go outside the group because time was of the essence.

There were suggestions of drawing lots, but the fact that the ones who had found the Blessed Scimitars had been trained in their use, and killed wolves with them was pushing towards them being the Champions to try to kill Kongaray. They said that they were not warriors and therefore could not be Champions but that was true of everyone in the group.

Eventually, they accepted their Championship and said they would train further, but the old texts and books would have to be read to find out how to bring Kongaray up to face the Champions.

They knew that there could be no room for error, but this had to be done as soon as possible, otherwise Kongaray would take more boats or even come ashore and destroy the town.

In the old texts, they came across some suggestions and ideas. Bonfires on the beach would attract the beast, but it did not like fire, it was the light that would attract it.

A Blessed Scimitar to the body would enter it and poison it as the blade dissolved and subdued the beast. Legend had it that a second Scimitar to the eye would kill the beast forever, but there had never been a second Scimitar or second Champion.

That had changed now.

The group went to the townspeople and told them to build and light bonfires on the beach to bring Kongaray up from the depths for the Champions to slay.

This had to be done at night as daylight would dissipate the light from the bonfires.

The bonfires were built and as the sun went down and the moon rose, they lit the fires.

The Champions were armoured for this encounter and held their Scimitars knowing that they only had one chance to fully despatch the beast.

They waited.

They were scared.

Then the water started to boil, something was coming.

Both the champions wanted to run, but each knew they had to be there for the other, for their families and for their town. They knew this would be terrifying, but they hoped that with divine providence and the Blessed weapons in their hands, they would put an end to this terror once and for all.

Kongaray rose black and terrifying with eyes of fire, and moved towards the shore, intent on the watching townspeople.

The first Champion ran towards Kongaray, jumped and stabbed his Scimitar into the body of the beast. Kongaray was shocked, and the blade shone and dissolved. Kangaray's black body was lit as the Blessed Scimitar poison spread through its body and it fell into the shallows and started to sink.

The second Champion knew that he had to pierce Kongaray's eye with his Blessed Scimitar but that meant diving down to the sinking head, but he knew he had no choice. Through the black water, he plunged, found the beast's eye and pierced it with his blessed blade. The Scimitar turned to poison light in the head of Kongaray. and beast began to dissolve and turn the waters into an aquatic inferno.

The Champions had vanquished Kongaray and the town was safe, not for five hundred years, but forever.

The Scimitars were gone, and the Champions returned to being ordinary men, having brought a peaceful future to their town.
