They had been warned. Schools closed early because the roads would be icy for days. The South didn't get much wintry wizardry like this one was expected to be. The talk of the town was "snow days." All the parents who weren't picking their kids up were at the grocery stores stocking up on snacks, getting bread and milk, and thinking ahead for items like toilet paper and candles should the lights go out.
They were prepared though. They had a generator and a Coleman stove if needed.
Mrs. Daniels wasn't happy about the snow days. She already got anxiety thinking about the feeling of being "trapped." She knew the kids would eventually get cranky and begin fighting. It wasn't like she could tell them to stay outside for long. It would be too cold for that.
So, she made sure she stopped by the video store and rented five movies to pop into the VCR, bought popcorn to microwave, and sodas. She also had books and game boards, paper dolls for the girls, and toy airplanes for the boys to assemble and fly. She bought vanilla to make them snow ice cream when snow eventually floated down.
Eventually it did snow, they made the yummy ice cream which nature provided, they all played and laughed at the movies, Popeye, in particular. It was their favorite.
In the South, when it snows, unless you have a microscope, you won't see patterns. You just see white and wet. And it's cold!

Caves have an odd smell: mineral, fungal, traces of the feces of bats and the slow rot of silent, blind fish in dark, subterranean pools. I have heard the young men of the village mock each other by sniffing an exhalation and declaring: "Cave breath!" as though it were a mortal insult, some potent hex. I know what they mean, now. Imagine that the petrichor, the rich and pungent cologne that rain dapples soil with, became concentrated, corrupted, and was breathed into the mouth of someone who will never, fully exhale.

In breaking news, rehabilitated Republican Senator Johnnie Johnson (Pronouns: HE, HIM, HIS) called a press conference from the Men’s room of the New Orleans Louis Armstrong International Airport, Concourse B, across from the Ignatius Reilly’s Lucky Dog stand. The Senator had just returned from a sexual reorientation rehabilitation program in Memphis, TN after being publically disgraced at a Buckee’s Truckstop restroom soliciting sex from an undercover cop three months ago. He is a founding member of the Reformed Christians for Christ, a conservative, pro-family and ex-gay advocacy group. In the spirit of being reborn, Senator Johnson invited reporters to marvel at his plans for a major remodeling of airport bathrooms.

This beautifully captures the anticipation and preparation for an unexpected snowstorm, the use of vivid details like the generator, colemanstove, rented movies makes everything seem more real. The efforts of Mrs.Daniel to keep the children entertained during the snow days are relatable and endearing. Lovely work.
You should have bought cans of spinach, watching Popeye might just have made them try it. I loved the Popeye movies, so great to not watch porn and violence years ago.
