A lullaby of love

By Aubriaun AshleyPublished 3 years ago Updated 3 years ago 4 min read

Once upon a time there was a cave. This cave was hidden beneath trees in a forest in Northern Egypt. The cave was said to be forbidden. It was told that dragons occupied the cave. Several tales were told that strange things happened in the cave. It was said that magic dragons lived in the cave but no one had ever seen one.

Mighty sounds were made in the cave mimicking a tone like that of an lion . The air inside the cave was cold and the ground swishy like a swamp. A family of dragons had lived in the cave. That was before the curse.

It had been discussed that the Sea Breather Ornery had discovered the cave. He was the ruler of land and sea. Ornery was a menace. He was impatient and would become agitated when bored. He planned to demolish any threat to his throne.

Ornery went to the cave and he cursed it. It was said that the curse had turned the dragons into spirits. It’s been discussed that the curse was irreversible.

It had been three years since the curse. The little dragon had been playing outside when the curse was cast. He would searched outside of the cave for objects to manifest his wishes. After a while Horrick went back to the cave but mother and father were gone. Horrick wondered where had they gone? Days turned into nights with no parents to love and protect him. Mother urged Horrick to keep his magic a secret. She’d always say the outside was dangerous for dragons. She told him about the Sea Breather Ornery, the mermaids, and mermen who hated dragons. Before the curse his mother would hum to him. He wished mother could hum him a lullaby to calm his anxiety.

Instead Horrick sloshed about in a murky puddle. Horrick was filled with sadness and disappointment. The little dragon grew bigger, taller, and wiser. The curse left Horrick damp with grief. He knew he had to find his parents and break the curse of Ornery.

Horrick would summon the wish granters with his offerings. He splashed in water conjuring fluorescent florets and comets. He didn't enjoy being alone with no family around him. At dusk when the mermaids left their rocks Horrick would admire the nights sky and search for offerings.

Since mother and father vanished Horrick coddled his broken heart and the cave cradled his grief. The dragon tried many times to refuse calamity. With all of his might he began to practice his magic. Confident that he could find his way to his family.

This particular dusk brought with it a fragrance of possibility. The dragon was alert and aware. Understanding he had to avoid Ornery , the mermaids, and the mermen.

Horrick had gathered one ruby pebble for light , three stones for time passed, and one constellation for a path. He sat them in a cloth and tied the cloth to a stick. He started his journey from the cave. He passed the rocks where the mermaids and mermen congregated. He didn’t see Ornery so he continued on into the forrest . It was then that he unhooked the cloth from the stick and unwrapped the cloth. Horrick positioned the ruby and the three stones in a line on the ground. He then held onto the constellation. With both eyes closed he asked the wish granters to lead him to his parents. He then made fire the color of a pink sunset from his mouth. The wish granters accepted his offerings and the clouds parted. Horrick opened his eyes. The ruby was gone as were the three stones. Yet the constellation was off into the distance. Horrick went toward his constellation excited but confused. Then from afar he heard a familiar melody so he started to ran faster. As he neared his constellation the humming grew louder and more clear. Reaching the constellation Horrick was shooked to see a small child playing beside it. The child had the ruby pebble and all three stones. Horrick watched carefully as the child ran up to him. Still humming the tune. She was not afraid of Horrick or bothered that he was a big glittery dragon. She was filled with joy and happiness to see him. Horrick was suspicious of her and asked, " child, who sings, why do you sing this song, my lullaby ?" Horrick leaned down to her height to listen to her response, she said, “It is me , I am your mother Horrick. My spirit is trapped inside within this body.” Horrick thought it odd but was grateful to have found his mother. He knew that next they'd have to collect offerings, change mother from a small child back into a dragon, and find father. Horrick had shattered Ornery’s irreversible curse. He would soon bring his family back together. There would be more battles to come but with mother close Horrick the magic dragon felt he’d already won.
