Basements are rooms loaded with mysteries of all kinds. What kind of mysteries do you think these steps lead? Down the six or more steps you are not sure what you may find especially when you notice the old door is slightly ajar. Basements are usually where families or whomever keep their washer and dryer and whatever down there to keep the rest of the house clutter-free. But...
To me basements or even a better term would be 'cellar'. What do you think of when you hear this term for basement. I think of someone who has a root cellar where they keep all there canned (homemade) fruits and vegetables, and maybe a few plants that like the dark and damp. With this term leads to one thinking other ideas like maybe someone hiding something like a diary or a journal with many private ideas that could lead to some nefarious escapades that no one needs to know that one did in the past that could lead to various kinds of confessions or convictions.
One night while asleep in the downstairs family room a visitor heard a noise coming from the cellar. They laid there for a while to see if they heard again. They thought it was only the wind. A while later they heard someone whispering, "Let me Out! Let me Out!" if a whisper could be loud. The visitor sat straight out and for some reason headed straight for the cellar steps and slowly made their way down the door that for some reason will not stay shut.
This person slowly enters the cellar room and cautiously enters the room and looks around. They try to turn on the lights and of course no lights for the bulb have been burned out for quite some time since no one uses this room no longer. They start to glance around the room and see another smaller door and it's slightly opened too. They are starting to I should have waited till morning to check this out, but curiosity was too great and hoping the old adage does not come true. At least there were some small windows that did let the moonlight in for it being a full moon. It helped a little to see what is around, and maybe who.
"Let me Out!" "Let me Out!" they heard the voice. They felt a cold sweat run down their back but still continued for curiosity was too great. They entered this small room and saw the apparition in the old mirror on the wall. They each looked at other, and they asked how to I get you out for I will help you if I can.
The spirit says, "Please, look over in the right corner and state those words, and I will be released. They had one question for some reason this person has read and seen too many horror books and movies for he asked, "Will I be then in the mirror while you go to wherever?" "If I let you out, you just go." "Is that a deal?" "Yes or no." Okay, it's a deal I will just go for that might be a change.
The words were just the same as what they apparition said, but with one added word. "Let me Out, Pleeeessssee!" They stated the words and out came a little girl and a little boy who walked out the door sort of and in the other room they saw their mom and dad and ran towards them and then just faded away. They felt good for these two little children were the children of the original family that built the house and when some construction on the house was being done, they got trapped and this was a time when children were seen and not heard, and no one seen them in the cellar for the parents thought they just disappeared somehow.
They went back up the cellar steps and went back to the family room for it was still dark outside and they would ask their friends more about the original family and the sounds that was heard in the basement cellar. One never knows what one will find in this mysterious room under a house.

Nice, I enjoyedthe happy ending! I've always wanted to stumble across a secret room at my house.
Very captivating! Yes I used to think the basement is a place to keep secrets 😄
Wow! For once a basement story ends well, well, accidental death aside.
