Her Choice

When Love Defies Judgment

By Rohitha LankaPublished 9 months ago 3 min read

In a society that forgives men for everything, why is a woman condemned for following her heart?

A woman, married and bound by vows, begins to think about another man. Maybe it's emotional neglect, loneliness, or just the aching desire to feel something real again. Whatever the reason, her mind drifts toward someone else. She falls for him, and eventually, she marries him. Despite the world whispering a thousand stories into her ears, she stays firm. She chooses him, and nothing else matters.

She doesn't care about society's judgment. That man becomes her world. But then he dies. And suddenly, everyone acts like nothing else happened except her fault. Even if she left everything behind to be with him, even if it cost her stability, comfort, and reputation, people still question her. Was it her sin to love again? Was it wrong to follow her heart when it led her away from a marriage that had already stopped being a home?

But nobody says a word about the man. The man who might have wooed her, promised her more, or simply gave her what the first husband couldn't. any of the country has, it seems that no matter how flawed a man is, he can always come home. The door will be open, and the teledramas will continue like nothing happened. But for a woman? She's cast out, whispered about, and burdened with shame.

So why does a woman seek another man when she already has one?

If the love and care she longed for were with the husband she first chose, would she ever look elsewhere? If he made her feel safe, desired, and heard, would her heart have wandered? But instead, many women bend themselves in silence. They bow their heads in front of so-called ''smart'' men, swallowing their own needs like beggars asking for crumbs of affection.

Society sees the perfect woman as one who wears a bun, cooks every meal, hugs her children, and bears bruises in silence. But what about the woman who doesn't fit that mold? The one who leaves? Who divorces? Who puts a streak of color in her hair, wears earrings, maybe even sips a drink once in a while? Is she any less of a woman? Or just a woman finally finding herself?

What about the husbands who never send a message all day to ask if their wife ate, if she's okay? But they will snatch her phone to count the messages she sent. They never show interest in her day, yet suspect her every move. When she steps out for her child or for work, their first question is, "Are you meeting a man?"

And when she's sick or in pain, who's there? Nobody to go to a school meeting, nobody to get medicine, nobody to care. But the moment she finds someone who does care, people scream, ''She's immoral!''

So what's wrong with unrequited love? Is every relationship outside marriage just about lust? Is there no room for emotional connection, for shared pain, for gentle conversations at midnight

Can't a woman long to be seen, to be someone's first thought in the morning? To have a bond where love is not taken for granted, where affection is shown without shame?

Maybe what she seeks isn't rebellion, it's just love. A simple, loyal, tender love. And maybe, just maybe, that shouldn't be a crime.?

Is it so wrong for a woman to crave presence, not just promises? To want arms that hold her without question? Love isn't always loud, it's in the quiet gestures, the shared silences. If society can forgive a man's many flaws, then maybe it's time it starts understanding a woman's heart, too.
