Grandma and the laptop

How she outsmarted everyone.

By Novel AllenPublished 2 years ago Updated 2 years ago 3 min read

I have always been here with this wonderful lady, from the day she was born, I saw her grow up and do growing things and adult things. I was always there to keep her company.

Grandma Mae was eighty-two years old, sophisticated and every inch a queenly lady who insisted on living alone. Truth to tell, aside from a little high blood pressure, she was healthy as a horse. Of course she had pains, arthritis, stiff joints, bones that pop when she walked and, she allowed no one to speak about her fake teeth. You know, the woes of any aging body. She had a quick wit that rivaled any notion of her losing her memory. In fact she could outsmart any one on a given day.

Father bough grandma a new cell phone and computer to keep her company, you know, the ones with great big letters and numbers, so she can see the words properly with her glasses.

"What do I need a cell phone and top lap for anyway, I have a phone on the wall and one by my bed". I heard grandma say.

The grandkids had a lovely giggle when grandma had a straight face while calling a laptop a top lap. Grandma saw the joke after it was explained and kicked everyone out of her little house.

Back at the family home the telephone rang shrilly. Mother answered it, after noticing everyone's head buried deep into the various forms of electronic devices. Only grandma called on the land line anyway.

Granny Mae sounded alarmed.

"I lost the thing, you know, the round thing like the globe with all the trees and flowers on it, I looked but can't find it anywhere".

"Ok, stay calm. I will ask father and the kids to come right over".

They all piled into the family car, the kids complaining bitterly that they just left grandma and why do they have to go back there already. Father ignored them all, ordering them all to leave their electronic stuff in the house. They got even madder and sulked the entire way. A quick drive and they had arrived. They could easily have walked, but that would have brought the demons of hell to his eardrums. Finally arriving at the house, grandma again described the thing, me, that she had lost. Round with trees and flowers on it. last time she saw it was when she was outside.

Grandma and I (me), sat on chairs and watched them as they searched the garden, the young lad climbed up the little dwarf tree with sturdy limbs, the little girl smelled the flowers and peeked under them in the bushes. The teenager eyed grandma slyly as she searched along the fence line where she could see the teenage young man play football shirtless in his backyard next door. She looked away hurriedly as he turned and waved at her. Grandma chuckled knowingly.

Curious birds alit upon my tree limbs to watch the spectacle unfolding below them. Butterflies flitted hither and thither, happy to have some company again, it had been a while since they saw kids in the backyard garden. No one came to play anymore. Kitty next door meowed and peeked her head through the shrubs.

Father searched diligently under every bush and tree, yet not a round thing was to be found. Yet I was right there, in plain sight for everyone to see.

"What an absolutely lovely day". Grandma said to me.

Finally, after about two hours, with the younger kids reluctant to leave the cat, and the teenager reluctant to leave the sight over the fence, father decided to end the search. Mother would be getting anxious.

"That is quite ok, come back tomorrow and search again, maybe you will have better luck". Said Grandma.

They agreed that they would. Everyone had had a really great time being outdoors for a while. Grandma smiled as she rocked back and forth on the porch, fanning herself and musing.

"I wonder if they realize by now that they all found you again world. The joy of being out in nature the way that we are meant to be. I did tell them you were round with trees and flowers and such lovely things".

"That you did, grandma, that you did". I replied.

"Yet, I will need them to show me how to use this laptop thing. If they find my world, I would like to find out about this world that comes inside of a silver flattened box. I wonder how they fit the world wide web inside of it. Isn't that what they say is inside of it".

"Me too Mae, me too". Replied the real world, happy to be found again.

I loved this, Novel. Grandma and her well-meaning trickery. Just great.

  • So cool! I grew up hearing stories like this and being tricked into picking berries, planting gardens, fishing, swimming, "You go play outside. Don't be lazy now." Everyone else I knew was watching cartoons on a Saturday morning! Then she did the same thing to my children! Good thing!

I love your new mini bio too! Short and sweet! And inspiring. I liked this part particularly “fanning herself and musing” when she’s on the porch watching them. ☺️😆 Sounds a bit like my mum with technology! 😅
