Everything Looks Better From Far Away...

But Looks Can Be Deceiving!

By J.W. BairdPublished 5 months ago 3 min read

I walk down the streets just to get away

I try to image other people’s life’s as they pass on by

Some look away and some give a pleasant smile as they say hi

Have you ever noticed how everything looks better from far away

That dog and it’s master, twinsies, what a scary sight

I would hate to run into them out late at night

The mom pushing the stroller like she has no worries or cares

Everything neat and down tight from the crisp tucked in blanket to the little one’s curliest hair

I try to go on my way, but it’s hard at times not to stare

Everyone judges even those that see me trying to trudge up this big hill

As I look down across the hills and the valleys

All I see is people on their phones and scrolling through social media, liking, and sharing, and posting their latest selfies

But the stories we haven’t seen and the cries never heard

They stay hidden behind the fake lies and words

They say they are fine but are they truly

Do we stop to ask to see if they are fine or just stick to ourselves

And say out of sight out of mind

It’s a world full of chaos that everyone tries to keep out of view

Busy working and running the family around until are faces turn blue

It’s the world that we have come to live in

And not everything we see is true

Many suffering because they feel like they don’t fit it

But none of their family or friends even have a clue

It’s the comedians in our lives that try to make everything seem like it’s all laughter and giggles

But sometimes they are the real ones hiding the pain they are enduring deep down inside

It’s the friends like Eeyore struggling with their mental health

But hiding their true feelings because in this country it’s a huge stigma

Almost like a built in weakness, when in reality a chemical imbalance that they can’t control

So they hold back tears with their heads held high, all the while as they continue to smile

Have you ever sat back and watched passers by

You never know who is truly struggling just to stay alive

It could be the guy at the grocery store bagging up all your food

Or the teacher at the school in your neighborhood

The mailman who delivers your mail

The girl at the nail salon or the one that does your hair

It could be the athlete you watch every week on tv

It could even be him, or her, you, or me

Having mental health issues is a scary part of reality

You may not even realize it when it happens to the person who is always the life of the party

I mean what do you look for, what are the signs

Are those who suffer from it easy to see

Don’t they all just wear shades of black and like to sit in the dark

Do they listen to Heavy Metal, Rock, or Punk

Gansta Rap, The Blues, or a lot of that Funk

Do they watch all those sappy Rom-Coms

Or Isolate from all their friends and family and try to stay in their rooms

It’s truly hard to tell these days what someone may be going through

All I can say is check in on your friends and your loved ones too

Everything looks better from far away

You could make a huge difference in someone’s life, if you sat down next to them one day

Then ask the person if they are truly okay, and tell them “Sometimes I can get blue too…They say nothing lasts forever, you got this, just don’t give up the fight, one day, hopefully soon, everything will once again be alright!”
