"Apocalypse" by Albert Goodwin, 1903

The summer heat was suffocating, and the air thick with humidity. It was the kind of weather that made you feel like you were drowning in the very air you were breathing. But for Ember, coming to the end of their teenage years, the heat was the least of their worries.

Ember had always been afraid of the dark, and the underground world they were forced to live in only amplified that fear. It wasn't just the darkness that scared them, though. It was the knowledge that they were trapped, confined to a world that was never meant for humans to inhabit.

But it wasn't just fear that drove Ember. It was envy. Envy of the world above, where the sun shone bright and the air was fresh and clean. They longed to be able to walk outside without feeling like they were suffocating. To feel the wind on their skin, and the grass under their feet.

Ember's envy was fueled by the stories they heard from the older members of their community. Stories of a time before the world was plunged into darkness, before the climate changed and the oceans rose, before humans were forced to retreat underground.

But Ember's fear and envy were not the only things driving them. There was also a sense of determination. A determination to find a way out, to escape the suffocating underground and see the world above for themselves.

One day, while exploring the tunnels that crisscrossed the underground world, Ember stumbled upon a strange room. The walls were made of a man-made metal that shimmered like water, and the air was thick with the scent of ozone.

As they looked around, Ember realized that this room was not like any other they had ever seen. There were strange machines and equipment scattered about, and it was clear that someone had been using this room for some kind of experiment.

Ember's curiosity got the better of them, and they began to examine the machines more closely. As they did, they noticed a strange device that seemed to be emitting a soft humming sound.

Without thinking, Ember reached out and touched the device. Suddenly, they felt a jolt of electricity course through their body, and everything went black.

When Ember opened their eyes again, they were standing outside, in the middle of a tropical paradise. The sun was shining bright overhead, and the air was fresh and clean.

At first, Ember was overjoyed. They had finally escaped the underground world and had made it to the world above. But as they explored further, they realized that something was not quite right.

The world around them was not the lush paradise they had expected. Instead, it was a dystopian wasteland, the result of years of neglect and abuse by humans. The once-beautiful landscape was now a barren, lifeless desert.

Ember was devastated. They had risked everything to escape the underground world, only to find that the world above was just as bleak and inhospitable as the one they had left behind.

But even in the face of such despair, Ember refused to give up. They knew that there had to be a way to make things right, to repair the damage that had been done to the world.

And so, with a heavy heart, Ember set out to find a way to heal the world. They knew that it would not be easy, and that there would be many obstacles in their path. But Ember was driven by a fierce determination, and the knowledge that they had nothing left to lose.

As Ember journeyed through the wasteland, they began to notice something strange. The weather was changing, becoming more unpredictable and volatile with each passing day. It was as if the world itself was fighting back against the humans who had abused it for so long.

And so Ember pressed on, driven by fear, envy, and now, a fierce desire to help heal the world. They encountered many challenges along the way, from harsh weather to hostile survivors who saw Ember as a threat.

But Ember refused to back down. They continued to search for ways to heal the world, using their knowledge and skills to create solutions to the problems they encountered.

Over time, Ember began to see the world slowly heal around them.

The weather stabilized, and new life began to emerge from the once-barren landscape. Ember's determination had paid off, and they had helped to bring about a new era of hope for the world.

As the years passed, Ember became a legend, a symbol of hope and perseverance in a world that had once been on the brink of collapse. And though they knew that there was still much work to be done, Ember took comfort in knowing that they had played a small part in healing the world and ensuring a brighter future for all.
