Eastern Wisdom: The Little Monk's Dilemma

Knowing when to cut your losses and being able to navigate turns are the keys to witnessing different life circumstances.

By Haoxiang YangPublished 2 years ago 1 min read

The Little Monk, engaged in spiritual practice within the temple and immersed in studying scriptures, often pondered matters of life and death. One day, he came across a perplexing question that left him in a quandary. Seeking guidance, he approached his master:

"If one day, stepping forward leads to death, stepping backward also leads to demise, and you find yourself trapped in this dilemma, how should one resolve it?"

After a brief moment of contemplation, the master smiled and replied:

"Life's path is abundant with countless directions. Since neither forward nor backward offers a way, why not consider a different angle and veer to the side? Changing direction or taking a turn might just usher in a turning point."

Wisdom:

Throughout one's lifetime, it's crucial to grasp the art of adaptability. Stubbornly persisting even after hitting a dead end is akin to hitting a wall and refusing to turn back. To navigate wisely, one must be willing to take a different route when necessary, and not cling to a singular perspective.

Timing a turn is key to escaping predicaments. The ability to adapt is what leads to progress in the long run. Taking a turn isn't about avoiding or giving up; it signifies a clever approach to handling situations.

In the Book of Changes (Yijing), it is said: "In straitened circumstances, change, and through change, one finds a way; with a way, one can endure."

While some may advocate for unwavering perseverance in the face of adversity, in reality, when you're confronted with something that's either impossible or for which you lack a solution, it's wiser to let go and find a reasonable alternative sooner rather than later.

Life's journey is both long and far-reaching, replete with ups and downs. During moments of confusion or despair, resist the urge to be confined by your current situation. By adopting a fresh perspective, you might just unveil a silver lining amidst life's trials and tribulations.
