Deliveruber
What It Used To Be Like

Remember what it used to be like.
If we wanted something we could go out and buy things from shops.
But we got lazy, it was so easy to get things delivered.
Everything from food, clothes, phones to household stuff from Amazon, Deliveroo and Uber. We ordered everything by phone.
There was no need to leave the house.
We had no need for money and stuff was sent to the house for us to assemble.
The Vans and delivery bikes began to be replaced by drones, which we thought was fun.
What we didn't see was all the shops closing because everyone stayed home. There were no cars, and the Drones were marked with the name "DeliverUber".
Everything had to be ordered from them, the App was automatically downloaded to phones and devices and it wiped everything else because it was the only thing that you needed.
We became scared to go out, we wanted to go to shops and buy stuff.
There were none left.
No supermarkets, no corner shops, no fast food outlets, no cafes, nothing apart from derelict shopfronts.
Food became generic, this was not marked DeliverUber but Soylent.
Life became grey, we had accepted it, but never saw it coming.
We were fed, and entertained by television and devices and we just accepted it.
We wondered how it had come to this.
We were prisoners of our own apathy.
This was our own taste of hell.
Isolated from all we had taken for granted.
We talked, we didn't want this, we wondered what would happen if we took to the street.
Apathy took hold and we were either too scared or too comfortable to do anything about it, and we knew we would go through the same emotions tomorrow.

Wonderful story, Mike. Sad but insightful 💙
Satirical sagacity is clearly evident herein. Life cannot be delivered.
Very insightful tale of modernity.
A not so futuristic glimpse of reality....great story.
It's true. Well done, Mike.
Sad but true, and thoughtful.
Great story and a lot to think about as well. When you mentioned soylent and I remembered a book and a movie named Soylent Green.
