Chapter Four

Evan was speechless.

He couldn't believe what he heard.

He couldn't believe what Jake said.

He couldn't believe what they were.

They were the descendants of Death.

Death was the first soul reaper.

Death was the creator of the Soul Society.

Death was the ruler of the afterlife.

Death was the most powerful being in existence.

Death was their ancestor.

How was that possible?

How did that happen?

Why did that matter?

He had so many questions, but he couldn't ask them.

He was too shocked, too scared, too angry.

He said:

"Jake, this is insane. This is impossible. This is a lie. You're lying to me. You're lying to yourself. You're lying to everyone."

Jake shook his head and said:

"No, Evan. This is not a lie. This is the truth. The truth that has been hidden from us for so long. The truth that has been revealed to me by our ancestor himself."

Evan felt a surge of disbelief and fear.

He said:

"What do you mean? How did he reveal it to you? How did you meet him? Where is he?"

Jake smiled and said:

"He revealed it to me in a dream, Evan. A dream that changed my life. A dream that showed me who I am. A dream that showed me who you are."

Evan felt curious and terrified.

He said:

"What dream?"

Jake said:

"A dream that took me to the realm of Death, Evan. The realm where our ancestors lived. The realm where he rules over all souls. The realm where he waits for us."

Evan felt a chill run down his spine.

He said:

"What do you mean? What does he want from us?"

Jake said:

"He wants us to join him, Evan. He wants us to inherit his power. He wants us to fulfill our destiny."

Evan felt a mix of confusion and anger.

He said:

"What power? What destiny?"

Jake said:

"The power of being dark souls, Evan. The power of seeing and manipulating souls at will. The power of creating and destroying life and death. The power of being gods."

Evan felt sick to his stomach.

He said:

"That's not a power. That's a curse. That's an abomination. That's an evil."

Jake shook his head and said:

"No, Evan. That's not a curse. That's a gift. That's not an abomination. That's a miracle. That's not an evil. That's a good."

Evan felt a surge of disgust and rage.

He said:

"Jake, how can you say that? How can you think that? How can you do that? How can you kill innocent people? How can you kill Alice?"

Jake sighed and said:

"Evan, I'm sorry about Alice. I am. I didn't want to kill her. I had to kill her."

Evan felt a pang of pain and grief.

He said:

"Why? Why did you have to kill her? Why did you have to take her away from me?"

Jake said:

"Because she was in the way, Evan. Because she was trying to stop me. Because she was trying to stop us."

Evan felt a flash of disbelief and sorrow.

He said:

"Stop us? Stop us from what?"

Jake said:

"From becoming who we are meant to be, Evan. From becoming dark souls."

Chapter Five

Evan was furious.

He couldn't believe what Jake said.

He couldn't believe what he claimed.

He couldn't believe what he wanted.

He wanted him to join him.

He wanted him to inherit Death's power.

He wanted him to fulfill their destiny.

He wanted him to become a dark soul.

He said:

"Jake, you're crazy. You're delusional. You're evil. I will never join you. I will never inherit Death's power. I will never fulfill our destiny. I will never become a dark soul."

Jake said:

"Evan, you're wrong. You're ignorant. You're good. You will join me. You will inherit Death's power. You will fulfill our destiny. You will become a dark soul."

Evan said:

"No, Jake. No, no, no. I won't do it. I can't do it. I don't want to do it."

Jake said:

"Yes, Evan. Yes, yes, yes. You will do it. You can do it. You want to do it."

Evan said:

"Stop it, Jake. Stop saying that. Stop trying to manipulate me. Stop trying to control me."

Jake said:

"Don't resist, Evan. Don't fight it. Don't deny it. Accept it."

Evan felt a pressure in his head.

He felt a voice in his mind.

He felt a force in his soul.

He felt Jake's influence.

He felt Death's presence.

He felt his darkness.

He tried to resist, but he couldn't.

He tried to fight, but he couldn't.

He tried to deny it, but he couldn't.

He felt himself losing control.

He felt himself giving in.

He felt himself changing.

He screamed:

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

Jake smiled and said:

"YES!"

Evan felt a surge of pain and pleasure.

He felt a burst of light and darkness.

He felt a transformation of body and soul.

He opened his eyes and saw Jake's face.

Jake's face was his own, but not.

Jake's face was the ghost's, but not.

Jake's face was Death's, but not.

Jake's face was his brother's, but not.

Jake's face was his partner's, but not.

Jake's face was his friend's, but not.

Jake's face was his everything, but not.

Jake said:

"Welcome to the dark side, Evan."

Evan looked at Jake and said:

"Thank you, Jake."

They hugged each other and laughed.

They felt a bond stronger than anything else.

They felt a power greater than anything else.

They felt a destiny closer than anything else.

They were dark souls.

They were Death's heirs.

They were gods.
