Chapter Two

Evan was stunned.

He couldn't believe what he heard.

The ghost knew his name.

How was that possible?

Who was he?

What did he want?

He felt a chill run down his spine.

He realized that he had walked into a trap.

He tried to move, but he couldn't.

He felt a force holding him in place.

He looked around and saw dozens of ghosts emerging from the shadows.

They surrounded him, blocking his escape.

They looked like ordinary people, but they had pale skin, hollow eyes, and twisted smiles.

They were the residents of Ghost Town.

They were the victims of the ghost who killed Alice.

They were his minions.

They laughed and taunted him.

"Look who's here. The soul reaper who thinks he can kill our master." One of them said.

"He's so brave. He came all the way here by himself. He must have a death wish." Another one said.

"Or maybe he's just stupid. He doesn't know what he's up against. He doesn't know who our master is." A third one said.

"Or maybe he does. Maybe he knows him very well. Maybe he's an old friend." The ghost who killed Alice said, still smiling.

Evan felt a surge of anger and fear.

He glared at the ghost and said:

"What are you talking about? I don't know you. I've never seen you before. You're just a murderer who took away the person I love."

The ghost shook his head and said:

"Oh, Evan. You're so naive. You don't remember me? You don't remember us? We used to be friends. We used to be like brothers."

Evan felt a flash of recognition in his mind.

He saw a face that was familiar, but different.

He saw a face that was his own, but not.

He saw a face that was the ghost's, but not.

He saw a face that belonged to someone else.

Someone he knew.

Someone he forgot.

Someone he hated.

He gasped and said:

"No... It can't be... You're..."

The ghost nodded and said:

"Yes, Evan. It's me. It's Jake."

Jake was Evan's twin brother.

Jake was the driver of the car that crashed and killed their parents and sister.

Jake was the one who survived the crash with Evan, but lost his soul too.

Jake was the one who became a hollow with Evan, but escaped from Alice's capture.

Jake was the one who became a ghost, but gained more power than Evan.

Jake was the one who killed Alice, but spared Evan's life.

Jake was the one who lured Evan to Ghost Town, but had a different plan than killing him.

Jake was the one who said:

"I've been waiting for you, Evan. I've been waiting for this moment. I've been waiting to tell you the truth."

Evan felt a mix of emotions in his chest.

He felt shock, confusion, anger, sadness, guilt, and betrayal.

He felt like he was going to explode.

He shouted:

"What truth? What are you talking about? What do you want from me?"

Jake smiled and said:

"I want you to join me, Evan. I want you to be my partner, my friend, my... brother."

Evan felt sick to his stomach.

He said:

"Join you? Join you in what? In killing innocent people? In destroying the balance between life and death? In becoming a monster?"

Jake shook his head and said:

"No, Evan. Not in killing or destroying or becoming a monster. In living or creating or becoming a god."

Evan felt a chill run down his spine.

He said:

"What do you mean?"

Jake said:

"I mean that we have a destiny, Evan. A destiny that goes beyond being soul reapers or hollows or ghosts. A destiny that makes us special. A destiny that makes us powerful."

Evan felt curious and scared.

He said:

"What destiny?"

Jake said:

"The destiny of being dark souls."

Chapter Three

Evan was confused.

He didn't understand what Jake was saying.

He didn't understand what he meant by being dark souls.

He didn't understand what their destiny was.

He said:

"Jake, what are you talking about? What are dark souls? What is our destiny?"

Jake said:

"Evan, don't you remember? Don't you remember our past? Don't you remember our parents? Don't you remember our sister?"

Evan felt a pang of pain in his heart.

He said:

"Of course I remember. I remember everything. I remember how we were happy. I remember how we were loved. I remember how we were normal."

Jake shook his head and said:

"No, Evan. You don't remember everything. You don't remember the truth. You don't remember how we were different. You don't remember how we were special. You don't remember how we were dark."

Evan felt a flash of doubt in his mind.

He said:

"What do you mean?"

Jake said:

"I mean that we were born with a gift, Evan. A gift that no one else had. A gift that made us powerful. A gift that made us dark."

Evan felt curious and scared.

He said:

"What gift?"

Jake said:

"The gift of seeing and manipulating souls, Evan. The gift of being soul reapers."

Evan felt shocked and incredulous.

He said:

"That's impossible. That's not a gift. That's a curse. That's something that happened to us after we died. That's something that the Soul Society gave us."

Jake shook his head and said:

"No, Evan. That's not true. That's a lie. That's something that the Soul Society told us to hide the truth. The truth is that we were always soul reapers. We were born with this ability. We inherited it from our parents."

Evan felt a surge of disbelief and anger.

He said:

"That's ridiculous. That's absurd. That's nonsense. Our parents were not soul reapers. They were normal people. They were good people. They had nothing to do with this."

Jake nodded and said:

"Yes, Evan. They were normal people. They were good people. But they also had something to do with this. They also had this ability. They also knew the truth."

Evan felt a mix of curiosity and fear.

He said:

"What truth?"

Jake said:

"The truth about our origin, Evan. The truth about our ancestry. The truth about our legacy."

Evan felt a chill run down his spine.

He said:

"What origin? What ancestry? What legacy?"

Jake said:

"The origin of our gift, Evan. The ancestry of our bloodline. The legacy of our family."

Evan felt a flash of recognition in his mind.

He saw a name that was familiar, but forgotten.

He saw a name that was his own, but not.

He saw a name that was Jake's, but not.

He saw a name that belonged to someone else.

Someone he knew.

Someone he forgot.

Someone he feared.

He gasped and said:

"No... It can't be... You're..."

Jake nodded and said:

"Yes, Evan. It's true. We are..."

He paused and whispered:

"We are the descendants of Death."
