Betrayal?

Katie and Dave

Katie looks at her phone and then her dad. He is staring at the TV and hasn't turned to acknowledge her when she came in. She reaches for the phone, the knowledge that she'd never leave it there uppermost in her mind. She wonders whether to say anything but she's nervous.

She decides to turn and leave and as she does, her dad takes a swig of his beer and says, "I picked it up off the floor. You must have dropped it. You ought to be more careful with it."

She stops. Gulps. Says "Thanks" and heads upstairs, heart pounding.

Katie

She doesn't know what to do. She unlocks her phone. Her texts aren't open and she feels a moment of relief but this means nothing. He could have looked regardless.

She doesn't know what to do. Is she overreacting? She's pretty sure that he doesn't know her passcode. Was there a threat to his words? He stated them so emotionlessly that she can't be sure. Is she being paranoid?

He could've just picked it up like he said he did, put it on the chair. He's her dad. Surely she's worrying for nothing?

She wants to tell Bethan but feels like she's being silly because she has no proof. If she'd caught him looking at it, in the act, it would be different. Then she'd know for sure. But this...it's groundless. She sits and starts to write a text to Bethan but feels stupid and puts the phone down. And then she starts again and stops. Finally, she resolves to say nothing and shakes her head at her overreaction.

She resolves to sleep on it, maybe mention it when she texts Bethan in the morning.

Dave

I'm angry now.

What right does Bethan have to be communicating with my daughter? And about me?

It's all unravelling.

My own daughter thinks I'd hurt her? Is scared of me?

Katie and Bethan could only have met up because of the photos.

Katie. Katie found the camera.

This looks bad for me, no matter what.

Very bad.

So. How do I get control of this again?

I think I need to meet with Bethan.
