Meryl and Shandy had been dating about a year and were deeply in love. At 18 and 19 they already knew they would spend the rest of their lives together. They were talking a walk along the lane near her grandmother's house on their way to the store. It was a bright sunny day when suddenly a cloud appeared and before they knew it they were being soaked by the rain. They dashed into a neighbor's barn that was not currently being used and huddled together as they shook the wet from their clothes.
They stood looking lovingly into each other's eyes and began kissing. They pulled apart at the crack of thunder and Shandy grabbed Meryl's shirt when she saw a flash of lightning. he put his arm around her and she moved in closer feeling safe and contented. Meryl began rubbing her back and she turned to face him. They began kissing again and pulling each other closer. The rain poured, the lightning flashed and the thunder roared as if it all would never end.
Meryl began kissing Shandy's neck and whispering "I love you." She told him she loved him too as the heat between them intensified and drowned out the sounds and sights of the storm. He eased her down on the bare floor and they continued to kiss and move together in rhythm. Meryl pulled her hair tightly and she grabbed his rear end and clung to it.
They sat up and just held each other tightly and talked about what they were going to buy at the store. Neither said a word for a few moments but both pondered that was the barn was not the place to properly express their love on that day. It was a romantic idea but as soon as the storm began passing they began walking towards the store. They held hands along the way and exchanged "I love you's" several times. The rain was still falling lightly as the sun glistened upon the droplets.
As they continued walking a rainbow appeared in the sky. They pointed and laughed and joked about finding the pot of gold at the end. Shandy knew she was holding the hand of her pot of gold as they enjoyed the view in the heavens. It was a beautiful scene that would remain etched in her mind for decades. They were young and carefree and each wearing a sterling silver Id bracelet with the other's name on it.
Shandy also had a 10-carat white gold pre-engagement ring on the third finger of her left hand. They were youthful and in love and Shandy smiled as she looked at Meryl and realized she had given him a hickey. They made it to the store, purchased their items, and began walking back to her grandma's house. As they passed the barn Shandy blushed when she thought about what almost happened there.
Once they arrived Shandy realized that it was not quite time for grandma to get home from work. She locked the doors then took Meryl by the hand and led him to the room she shared with her grandmother. They lay across the bed and made sweet passionate love to one another and Shandy knew this was much better than having sex on the barn floor. They took their time and when it was over he told her she was the best he had ever had. He was her one and only but she knew no other man could make her feel this way. She told him so and continued to tell him for half a century.
Shandy lay back in her chair and began rocking as the sun began shining through the gentle rain that was falling. Soon the rain had stopped and as she sat on the front porch she could see that a rainbow had formed. she opened her mouth to call for Meryl and then realized she would never hear his voice again in this life.
A few years earlier, just weeks shy of their golden wedding anniversary Meryl had died in his sleep. She missed him terribly but knew she must go on. Each time it rained on a summer afternoon and the sun came through the clouds she would always remember fondly that day in the barn. It was so long ago yet seemed as if it were only yesterday when they were young, carefree, and madly in love.
