Analysis of leadership styles

Introduction

The film begins by presenting us with the impact of the asteroid that ended the existence of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. This is how we are introduced to what would become the central theme of this film. Thousands of years later, transporting us to more current times, we see how the remains of a new asteroid collide with a NASA shuttle, an organization that discovers the origin of these fragments and manages to capture a new asteroid close to the solar system, now threatening the human life and the Earth. The events of the film are treated in New York at the end of the 90s, where the US government, after discovering the threat that could put an end to what we know, looks for possible solutions and recruits candidates to carry out the mission of drilling the asteroid by installing a bomb on it.

Main character

Harry Stamper

Harry Stamper is a proud oil driller, known for never losing sight of his goal and for having a strong and unwavering character. These characteristics lead Harry Stamper to be the main objective of NASA to be the one who drills the hole in the asteroid and concludes the mission successfully. He is about a protective and busy father. Focused and with a clear vision, he seems to have no worries, however, within work and family, he finds problems with one of his most loyal workers: A.J. Frost, who maintains a loving relationship with his daughter Grace Stamper, despite disapproving of their courtship at first (because he thinks that she has not yet matured and that the young man still has a lot to learn), as the film progresses, we can see that A.J. she ends up earning not only his respect but Grace's hand as well.

In his job as a driller, he has shown to be capable of carrying out successful negotiations and creating a large contribution of capital, he even mentions that he himself was the investor of his company, giving the best qualification to do the previously consulted task.

Characteristics of his leadership:

Among the main characteristics that we find in his leadership, we note determination. Harry Stamper is a character who, although he does not seem to have a high level of maturity and emotional intelligence, feels the need and responsibility to fulfill a goal that he has set for himself, showing us perseverance along with his paternal instincts, even if his goals entail some sacrifice. important, he would not hesitate to do it for a greater cause, for the good of his employees or family members. We can see this in one of the last scenes in which he stops AJ Frost (partner of his daughter Grace whom he did not accept until this scene respectively), and offers to detonate the bomb (knowing that once the mission is completed he would die ), accepting this role and fulfilling what was assigned.

Harry also has a certain fondness for enhancing talent. Despite the fact that we can see that he feels a certain aversion towards A.J., he treats him like a son (shortly before he died, he speaks with him and confirms that it was like that), and he feels the need to support him and help him grow as a person; and not only him but the entire expedition team, he was always concerned about the performance of his companions, sometimes trying to teach them a strong lesson but always with the intention of promoting that talent and potential that they did not see.

One of Stamper's recurring teaching methods was to lead by example. He always showed himself as an important figure or an example to follow for everyone, that responsible adult who knows what he is doing even in times of crisis, so everyone felt identified with him, even security while training before taking off.

leadership type

We consider that his leadership style is located at point (8.4) within the type of determination leadership, we treat a dictatorial leader slightly inclined towards his own interests and personal life, but mainly, focused on the objective, his character to Despite having been in a hostile environment as shown in the film, he was rarely afraid or worried that something would fail, he had the determination to achieve the objective using any possible resource without going to extremes, knowing how to work under pressure. He did not see people as simple tools to fulfill his goal, but as valued workers and even close friends with whom he was able to live his last moments.

Conclusion:

This film is a clear example of how far perseverance and the love one feels towards their loved ones can go. Harry Stamper infected us with a feeling of pride and protection. Without a doubt, a man who gave everything for his business and family. We can see the sacrifice that many of the characters make in order to save the planet and at some point come to feel empathy for them, since we as human beings understand the price that can be paid.
