An Old Magical Dragon - And A Little Imagination

Making Friends-The Possibilities Are .... Just Beginning

By Kelli Sheckler-AmsdenPublished 3 years ago Updated 3 years ago 3 min read

A Little boy singing songs about creatures,

fairy tales, rhyming words - playing games.

Making up stories of faraway places,

where the animals know you by name.

*

He pretended to be on a journey,

where dreams came to life - in his mind.

He was protected by an old magic dragon,

taking him back and forth again, throughout time.

He imagined the day he met that dragon,

he drew about him - up in his room.

He wished somedays that he could be older,

But mama says, don’t grow up too soon.

*

He gazed out at the woods from his window,

making shapes from the leaves in the trees.

Creating worlds in the mist and the shadows,

changing adventures, whenever he pleased.

*

He abandoned his will to the notion,

he was a warrior protecting his mom.

Running barefooted into the park after dark,

knowing the dragon, would keep him from harm.

*

Oblivious someone was watching the dragon,

they snuck something odd in his drink.

When the dragon got up - to go with the little boy,

he got woozy and fell fast asleep.

*

The boy was alone in the darkness,

still, he trusted his companion to come.

He began to feel - kind of anxious,

he thought to himself, “this is dumb”

*

So, he ventured deeper into the forest,

something he promised - he would never do.

And he saw, tied up tightly, up high up in the trees,

the faithful old dragon, Aboue.

*

As he quickly climbed the tree to free him,

his legs got tangled and caught in the vines.

And he fell- falling headfirst, to the hard rocky ground,

but, Aboue caught his hand just in time.

The little boy grinned with excitement,

once again, the magic dragon came through.

For as long as the boy could remember,

he had been in the safe watch of Aboue.

*

But they wondered, who might hurt the dragon,

who would put something strange in his drink?

They sat collaborating together,

pressed their heads close together - to think.

*

Everyone they knew, loved the dragon,

the tot and his sweet mama too.

The fact that someone snuck around being naughty,

they knew just what they had to do.

They would plan an elaborate party,

give a prize for the bravest costume.

Make the prize too big to resist stealing,

cause, that's something the naughty ones do.

*

So, they thought of a prize, for the winner,

put up pictures - building the hype.

And they waited for them in the closet,

painting their faces with bright colored stripes.

*

They wanted to blend into the background,

which was hard, cause they both liked to paint.

Before they knew it, they had painted themselves a bright red and pink,

and the fumes made them loopy and faint.

*

When mama came in the room and discovered

the prize and her grand pies were gone.

Her face grew redder - than all of the paint

and she told the old dragon, "Go home"

*

The little boy left red tear streaks, running down his cheeks,

with a mop and a bucket in hand.

His mama made him clean up the big mess,

she was not impressed at all, by their plan.

*

Now the dragon obeyed the mother,

after-all, that's what good dragons do.

But on the way to his home in the forest,

that's when the real trouble ensued.

*

Mama and the boy - heard the dragon roaring,

they followed puffs of smoke and ambered flames.

When they reached him, he'd captured the villain,

they ripped off his mask - and asked his name.

*

Aboue asked, "why did you do it,

steal the prize and mess with my drink?"

The criminal said, with big tears in his eyes,

"I'm sorry, it's not what you think."

*

Underneath the mask of a monkey,

was the tiniest dragon they'd seen.

He said, "I just wanted someone to notice,

and play and like someone like me."

*

So, they decided to forgive the wee dragon,

because they knew, they've made bad choices too.

And they had been given a second chance,

and extended that to their new friend, Beboo.

Now they all laugh and play in the forest,

two mighty dragons and boy hero named, Gregory.

Dreaming of their next glorious adventure,

as new friends together, making new memories.

Nice rhyming, I found myself after reading this being unable to get that specific rhyming pattern out of my head. A good thing if you ask me. I was very curious what had happened to the dragon at first. Initially, I thought the dragon was an extension of the boy, and someone had actually drugged him instead. Nice poem/story :D
