1975 'Ali Baba and the forty thieves'

Ali Baba was a poor woodcutter who lived a simple life on the edge of a dusty old town. His small home was modest, but peaceful, shared only with his gentle and hardworking wife. Every morning, he walked into the forest with his worn axe and his loyal donkey, hoping to gather enough wood to sell at the market. Life wasn’t easy, but Ali Baba never complained. He believed that honesty and patience would eventually bring him something good.

One afternoon, while cutting branches in a quiet part of the forest, he felt the ground shake slightly. At first he thought it was just the wind, but then he heard the distant thumping of hooves. Curious and worried, he climbed up a nearby tree, pulling his donkey with him into the bushes below. From there, he watched a long line of forty horsemen galloping toward a massive rock formation hidden among the trees.

The men looked fierce, their faces covered and their saddlebags stuffed with heavy loads. Ali Baba immediately understood what kind of people they were. Bandits. Dangerous ones. He held his breath, praying they wouldn’t notice him.

The riders stopped right under the very tree where he was hiding. Their leader stepped forward, raised his arm, and called out strong, clear words:

“Open sesame.”

To Ali Baba’s shock, the enormous rock slowly split open, revealing a hidden cave behind it. One by one, the thieves carried their heavy sacks inside. After a while, they came out again, their bags now empty, and the leader repeated:

“Close sesame.”

The rock sealed shut as if nothing had ever happened. Then the bandits mounted their horses and rode away, disappearing into the forest.

Ali Baba waited until he was sure they were completely gone. His heart was still racing, but curiosity pushed him forward. He climbed down, stood before the giant rock, and repeated the same words he had heard:

“Open sesame.”

The stone door parted, and Ali Baba stepped inside. What he saw left him breathless. Piles of gleaming gold, polished silver, shimmering jewels, and embroidered silk filled the cavern from wall to wall. It was a secret treasure collected over years of robbery.

Ali Baba didn’t take greed too far. He picked three sacks of gold, enough to lift him and his family out of poverty, but not enough to draw suspicion. After closing the cave with the magic words, he hurried home.

When he showed the gold to his wife, she was stunned. To count the coins properly, she borrowed a measuring bowl from Kasim’s wife. Kasim, Ali Baba’s older brother, was a wealthy merchant but had a greedy heart. Suspecting something, Kasim’s wife secretly smeared honey inside the bowl. When the bowl came back with a gold coin stuck to it, Kasim demanded to know where Ali Baba had found such wealth.

Under pressure, Ali Baba told him the truth. Kasim wasted no time. He gathered two strong mules and rushed to the cave. Inside, he loaded himself with treasure, but when he tried to leave, fear clouded his mind. He couldn’t remember the magic words. No matter how many random phrases he shouted, the rock remained closed.

Soon, the footsteps of the thieves echoed at the entrance. They saw the mules waiting outside and immediately knew someone had broken into their hideout. They opened the cave and caught Kasim inside. Their punishment was swift and merciless.

When Kasim didn’t return home, Ali Baba searched for him. He found what the bandits had left behind and mourned in silence. He and Kasim’s widow agreed to hide the truth from the world. Ali Baba moved into Kasim’s house and took responsibility for the family. He used his share of the treasure wisely, helping the poor and improving lives around him.

But the thieves were not finished. They soon realized their treasure was decreasing. They sent a spy into town to find new wealthy households. The spy followed Ali Baba and marked his door with a secret sign. But Ali Baba’s clever wife spotted it and painted the same mark on every house in the street. Confused, the thieves returned home ashamed.

The leader of the thieves decided to finish the matter himself. He disguised himself as an oil merchant and came to Ali Baba’s house, bringing forty large jars that he pretended were filled with olive oil. In reality, each jar held one of the bandits hiding inside.

That night, while preparing food, Ali Baba’s wife heard whispers from the jars. She understood the danger immediately. Without panicking, she heated a huge pot of oil and poured it into each jar, stopping the thieves before they could attack.

At midnight, the leader returned to free his men. When he found the jars silent and opened one, he was horrified. Realizing the plan had failed and fearing for his life, he fled the town forever.

From then onward, Ali Baba and his family lived peacefully. They used their wealth to help others and remained grateful for the miracle that saved their lives. The legend of Ali Baba became a lesson for generations: greed destroys, but honesty and courage always lead to a better path.
