A World Divided
A Short Fiction Story by McKenzie Merritt
Anger had once again reaped through the souls of the minority.
Another murder taking away one of their innocent.
Even younger in age than the most that had been taken from them.
Screams of heartache and demands for justice had filled the streets.
From protests to violent fights with their opposers, the people clashed with one another in the hopes that the hurt that filled them would finally drain.
But it was a hurt that was deeply ingrained in their very souls, history, and present lives.
So they set fire to the streets.
To the buildings made by those that had hurt them and continue to degrade them.
But this day of fire was like no other.
It spread further and greater until the only thing that was left in front of them was the enemy.
Ash seemed to fall from the sky naturally as it landed on every persons head, creating dusty and grey appearances.
One side filled with grief stricken yet ferocious men, women, and children standing tall, ready for battle.
The other side filled with the snide faces with barely hidden laughs of the enemy.
The enemies eyes filled with contempt and superiority as they stared into the very eyes of those they see as nothing but animals.
“This is it. This is what the world has come to.” Thought Tiana as she stood on the front lines against the enemy.
Clutching the heart-shaped locket to her chest she couldn’t help the tears that had begun to fall down her face.
She didn’t want it to be like this.
Life was not supposed to be like this for her.
Sure life was hard for people like her. It had always been hard for people like her.
From ugly looks, to brutality cases spread all over social media and the news, this murder shouldn’t have been anything new to them.
But it felt different this time.
It felt uglier.
It felt intentional.
It was intentional.
They had taken the one thing Tiana had left in this world.
The one person who had given her this very locket the day before he died.
They had taken everything from her.
The news had been making so many warnings and statements to everybody about staying inside and staying safe because of the ruckus outside.
People were going frantic as if this was some futuristic apocalyptic showdown that was going to occur soon.
Because people knew that this murder was like setting a bomb off in a mine Field.
But what outsiders didn’t know was that the apocalypse had started a very long time ago for people Tiana.
Their horrors and fight began the day their ancestors were taken advantage of and enslaved.
Their apocalypse had become their new normal.
It was time for change.
Wiping the tears from her eyes Tina began to turn around to the crowd of angry and distraught people behind her.
Taking a deep breath in, she had recited words to them that did not come from her mind but from what felt like a presence guiding her.
“We have fought for so long my people. We have strived for respect and the dignity that we deserve but have not been delivered. The horrors we have faced have been mind bending and soul crushing. All of us walk each day hoping for a change of heart from our enemy, yet to no avail.” Tiana spoke clearly with her head held high.
She had spoke in such a normal range, yet her voice seemed to flow out into the air for miles.
Each person hearing her and paying close attention to every word leaving her mouth.
“We will no longer ask. We will no longer play by their rules. They wanted this. They want to continue to fight with us. They want to continue to win. But no more!” Tiana said.
Yells of agreement rang out throughout the crowd.
“They will feel how we have always felt. They will feel how our parents felt and how their parents felt and so on. This societal curse ends today!” Tiana yelled.
“ We fight today not only for ourselves but for our future children. We are the future. Everything started with us and it will end with us. “ Tiana spoke again to the crowd of now excited individuals.
Tiana finally turns back to the enemy.
The gleam in her eyes almost deafening as it seemed to shake some of the enemies hard exterior.
Taking a deep breath in with a raised fist, Tiana began to run towards the enemy.
Behind her, thousands followed with screams ready for battle and hearts with determination.
This is a world divided.
