“Abuelita! Abuelita! You’re saying there was a time when people believed in the unknown and unknowable and social systems that didn’t correspond with reality or human nature?” Nina asked.

“Yes,” Abuelita replied.

“All people did was believe or respond to things that didn’t exist or were detrimental to human life?”

“It’s true, little one.”

Nina stopped, her face granite. “Why?”

“The reason lies with the earliest thinkers on the planet and the choice to follow their ideas, good or bad,” Abuelita said. “Yes. It was a lesson in irony. If you didn’t believe them, you were in the minority.”

“Wow.”
