On This Day

The twelfth of December, 12/12, a date when the UK and USA could agree for once. It also does happen twelve times a year, once a month. Nut this 12/12 was different. No one saw it coming. No one could explain it.

Scientists were flummoxed, and religious bodies said it was the work of either their god or their devil, without giving any reason for why it had happened.

It started like any other day. People got up, showered, washed did their stuff, had breakfast, tea, coffee and whatever and then started on their daily routine, being a parent, taking kids to school, going to their place of work, and very often both, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

Although nobody knew it, something was out of the ordinary.

Noon

Of course, a lot of people, especially in school knew that at twelve minutes past twelve on this day, digital devices, watches and clocks would display:

And a lot of people would capture it and share it on social media like it had never happened before or would never happen again, and that is certainly what they did.

Fans of numbers and followers of new-age disciplines told people to manifest at this time to have their dreams fulfilled, but that was the curse of social media, being under a deluge of things that had no scientific backing, but it made some people happy.

People captured their images and shared them and went on their way.

Then they noticed that something was wrong.

Watches and devices were still showing that it was twelve minutes past twelve. The assumption was some central server glitch, but a quick look for an analogue clock showed that they were stopped as well.

There was no panic until people realised that they were trapped in a very limited area. They tried to call people on their devices but their devices were frozen. They tried to walk but after a minute they were back where they started from.

The world was trapped in a minute 12:12 on 12/12.

Where people were not alone they started to panic, but after a minute they were back at the beginning and the panic started again, but they didn't see this was just repeating.

A single minute was repeating over and over again, the world was stuck in a sixty-second loop.

So What Happened?

Conspiracy theorists often maintain that some small cabal controls the world and that the human race is just some sort of experiment to them. Things normally went very smoothly but the Earth is actually a supercomputer simulation, and the Controllers were now panicking trying to work out why 12/12 was looping.

This has been running successfully for thousands of years, without any issue. The human race was completely unaware they were part of a program, whose purpose seemed to be "See what happens".

Well it had happened, the Earth had stopped working.

The Controllers got together and discussed the situation.

They remarked there was nothing wrong with the code, and it should not be looping but it was. There was nothing that could be changed but they needed to get the Earth running again.

They had tried slowing it down and speeding it up but to no effect. The Controllers were effectively the gods of Earth but were in a quandary now. They were all being drawn to the inevitable conclusion.

Nothing they did had worked, they had no practical solution.

There was one last thing they could do.

Shut it down and restart and hope that would fix it.

They did it and the Earth started up,

The time was 12:13

It worked, thank God.
