I'm not going to make a series out of this, I'm just going to post things that I make sporadically because I feel like I post enough anyway. Baking has always been my side-thing. Some time ago I was going to turn it into a business but after thinking about it, I decided that it would suck the joy and fun out of everything. Scones are something I quite like making and coming up with new savoury scones is something I like because I feel that the classic sweet scone can’t be messed with. Savoury scones though? the recipe is up for grabs. Let’s take a look at it then…
This recipe makes between 10 and 14 scones, depending on how big you want to make them. Remember, they will expand in the oven, so make sure you don’t make your dough balls too big when it comes to it.
Ingredients
(All milk products can be switched out for milk alternatives and eggs can be switched out for a tablespoon of applesauce per egg)
- 450g Self Raising Flour
- 2 tsp Baking Powder
- 50g Brown Sugar
- 100g Butter
- 2 Medium Eggs
- 2 Shot Glasses of Milk
- 70g Grated Cheese
- 1/2 Diced Red Onion
- 1 tsp Basil
How To
- Preheat your oven to 200C
- Mix together your flour, baking powder, basil, sugar and butter so that it resembles breadcrumbs
- Add your cheese and onion and mix in - you want these well blended into the breadcrumbs so they are nice and spread
- Beat your eggs and 1 shot of milk together and pour the mixture into the breadcrumbs
- Continue to mix until you have a dough
- Form into small spheres and press lightly to flatten from the top slightly
- Place on to a tray with greaseproof paper
- Grab your second shot of milk and a brush - brush your scones with the milk
- Bake for 12-15 minutes
- Allow to cool slightly and serve with ploughman’s chutney or dijon mustard
Conclusion
I hope you enjoy these, they are amongst my favourite to make and though I don't really eat scones - I definitely enjoy the idea of forming them and watching them rise in the oven.
