You'll be me and I'll be you

Changing places

By HermitsHousePublished 3 years ago Updated 3 years ago 16 min read

The outside world was unknown to her, but she could see a glimpse of it through the window in his room. She had never left the orphanage where she had lived since she was a baby. All she knew was the small, dreary rooms and filled to the brim of other children and noise. That was the day that would change her life forever.

It was always busy at the orphanage, so many children running around playing, screaming, crying. There wasn't a moment of peace for the girl, as she walked around her home she noticed a door that she'd never seen before in all her life living there. She walked in and saw it was a empty room with a single window at the end of the room. It was strange because the room looked as if it hadn't been dusted for years but as she walked up to it, the window was spotless.

She gazed through window, she noticed a boy on the other side, also looking in. He seemed to be about her age, with dark hair, tanned and clean clothes, Something you wouldn't see any other child where she lived would wear. They locked eyes for a moment, the boy could tell by looking at her that she looks as if she belongs in the past. As if he was looking through a tv screen and watching a old movie about 1984. The boy gestured for the girl to come closer.

Without hesitation, the girl walked closer to the window, they reached out their hands and suddenly they switched places! The boy was in the place of the girl, the girl was in the place of the boy. They both looked at each other, astonished by what had just happened.

"What's happened to us?" the girl asked in the body of the boy with his voice.

The boy looked around and back at the girl with a plan.

"To take each other's place," he replied with a mischievous grin. "I'll be you, and you'll be me."

They both set out to explore each others lives. Both believing each others lives to be a utopia as apposed to their dystopian way of life. The girl took the boys place and couldn't believe how much different the boys life was from hers at the orphanage. He had everything she could ever dream of. His family was wealthy and he had never wanted for anything material. He had the best clothes, toys, and gadgets, and he had always lived in the most luxurious houses and apartments. Parents, two elder brothers and even servants who waited on the family hand and foot. She was amazed, this life was everything she could ever hope for.

As the boy explored the orphanage, he couldn't help but feel a sense of relief. Despite the strict rules and the cramped, dreary rooms, he felt freer and happier than he had in his own life.

You see, the boy's family had always been wealthy and powerful, but they had never had much time for him. His parents were always busy with their own affairs, and they had hired a series of nannies and governesses to take care of him. But none of them had ever shown him any real kindness or affection. They had always treated him like a burden, scolding him for not being good enough and punishing him for any misbehaviour.

The boy had always felt lonely and unloved, and he had longed for a place where he could be himself and find some happiness. And as he spent more time at the orphanage, he realized that he had finally found it.

The other children at the orphanage were kind and welcoming, and they treated him like a friend. And the staff, despite their strict rules, were caring and nurturing, always looking out for him and making sure he was safe and happy.

For the first time in his life, the boy felt like he belonged somewhere. And as he sat at the window, looking out at the fields filled with children playing, he realized that he didn't want to go back. He wanted to stay at the orphanage, with the people who had shown him what it was like to be truly loved and accepted.

As the girl explored the boy's life, she was overwhelmed by all the sights and sounds of the city. She had never left the orphanage before, and she had always dreamed of experiencing the outside world. She was utterly amazed. He had his bedroom and bathroom and all these strange gizmos that she had never seen before. Everything was all new and strange but she was elated.

The boys life was everything the girl wanted. At the boy's house, the girl found the freedom and opportunity she had always dreamed of. She was able to explore the city and experience all the sights and sounds it had to offer. She felt like she had the world at her feet, and she loved the feeling of independence and possibility it brought her. A huge house, parents, two elder brothers and even servants that waited on his family hand and foot, she was amazed. The boy lived a life of such comfort, wanting for nothing. Not to mention all these strange devices that the girl had never seen before. she didn't know how to work them but she was excited to find out!

Hours had past whilst they were exploring each others lives and soon it became dark. They both came to the window where they first met, excited to tell each other all that they had found about each other. They reached out each others hands and swapped back to their original lives.

The girl thought that her first day living the boy's life was amazing. She had always dreamed of experiencing the outside world, and now she had finally gotten the chance. She had seen so many new sights and sounds, and she had felt a sense of excitement and possibility that she had never known before. She couldn't wait to take each others place again, excited about what she would discover next.

Another day came and then another, each time a new adventure for the both the children as they discovered new things living each others lives. However, they were about to discover the challenges of each others lives as well.

As the girl and the boy explored each other's worlds, they both realized that their own lives were not as happy as they had thought. The girl, who had always believed that the outside world was a magical place full of opportunity, was shocked to discover the strain of a world that was ever changing. And the boy, who had always taken his comfortable life for granted, was shocked by the strict rules and lack of freedom at the orphanage.

Despite the challenges they faced, the girl and the boy stuck together, supporting and helping each other through their difficult circumstances. And as they spent more time in each other's worlds, they began to see that their own lives were not as happy as they had thought.

The boy would teach the girl how to use the technology and dress so she would blend in and the girl would would help the boy to complete her task at the orphanage so no one would discover their secret and things were going well.

The girl was looking for a life that was filled with freedom and opportunity. She had always felt trapped and confined at the orphanage, with its strict rules and lack of choice. She had dreamed of experiencing the outside world and all the possibilities it offered, and she had longed to be able to make her own decisions and live her own life.

The boy was looking for a life that was filled with love, connection, and purpose. He had always felt isolated and alone, even in the midst of his privileged, wealthy family. He had never had anyone who truly cared about him or took an interest in his happiness.

At the orphanage, the boy found a sense of belonging and friendship that he had never known before. The other children accepted him for who he was, and the staff showed him kindness and affection. He felt valued and needed, and he knew that he had found a place where he could be truly happy.

The boy also found a sense of purpose at the orphanage. He enjoyed helping out with the chores and assisting the staff in caring for the other children. He felt like he was making a difference, and he loved the feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction it brought him.

Another day came and it was time to swap again. Today was different though. It was the first day of a new school for the boy, the boy was especially eager to swap today as some former bullies he knew would be attending the same place. The boy wasn't a very confident person and was extremely shy. The girl on the other hand was very tough and out spoken, she had to be living in an orphanage to survive. The girl was up for the challenge. Today was also especially important for the girl too. It was the day parents would visit the orphanage hoping to adopt and they couldn't let that happen or they wouldn't be able to swap lives again. The boys new challenge was to stay out of site at all times.

The girl was nervous as she walked into the boy's school on her first day. She had never been to a school like this before, and she wasn't sure what to expect. The boy had tried to prepare her as best he could, but she still felt out of her depth.

As she walked through the hallways, she noticed that people were staring at her. She was wearing the boy's clothes, and she knew that she looked out of place. She tried to ignore the stares and focus on her surroundings, but she couldn't shake the feeling of being an outsider.

She finally made it to the class room and looked around. She noticed a group of boys at the back of the class being loud and whacking another boy in front of them with a ruler. These must be the boys that the boy had warned her about. The girl couldn't bare to watch this and approached the boys with no fear.

"Why don't you pick on someone your own size!" she said in a voice louder then her body as she grabbing the ruler out of the bullies had.

The bullies were shocked but unfazed.

" We would but there isn't anyone our size" They stood up and moved close to her face to intimidate her. "lunch time, you and us!"

The bell suddenly rang and class had begun and the teacher began the lesson. Throughout the lesson the bullies were loud and disruptive, throwing paper balls at students and the teacher didn't do anything about it.

The Lesson ended and it and it was time for lunch.

Mean while the girls counter part living her life was dodging adults left right and centre. He had to make sure no one to try to take her away. There was these two men who he was especially wary of. They had come there to take as many children as they could to work in their factory. He had to make sure that they weren't successful and to save his new friends he had made at the orphanage, the children who the girl saw as her own family.

This was going to be tough for the boy, to save himself and the children at the orphanage. He couldn't let anyone be taken to work in a crummy factory for those crooks.

He created a plan he shared with the other orphans to make sure they wouldn't be sold to live out the rest of their days working to death in that factory. He planned to make the two crooks believe that the orphanage was haunted to scare them away and never return.

The boy knew that he had to come up with a creative and bold plan to stop the crooks from taking the children from the orphanage to work in their factory. He remembered watching a movie about a group of children who had scared off some criminals by pretending that their building was haunted, and he thought that this might be a good way to scare off the crooks as well. Thank goodness for tv he told himself.

He gathered the other children together and explained his plan to them. They were sceptical at first, but they agreed to give it a try. They worked together to create eerie noises and spooky decorations to make the orphanage look haunted, and they rehearsed their roles in the plan.

The boy knew that their plan was risky, but he was confident that it would work. He knew that the crooks were after the children for their labour, and he was sure that they wouldn't want to mess with a haunted orphanage.

While the boy and the orphans were working on this plan to save themselves, it was lunch time for the girl and the bullies were all surrounding her.

The playground fell silent and everyone was watching them. It was about to go down, suddenly the crowed of children began to chant.

"Fight, fight, fight, fight.." getting louder and louder

"Ready to get your butt kicked pipsqweek?" The bully said with confidence

"Fight, fight, fight, fight" The children of the playground were chanting louder.

The bully lifted up his fist and swung at her.

The crowed was roaring now screaming and chanting.

"Missed, my turn now" The girl said smugly smiling as she cracked her neck and knuckles.

One by one she took each and every bully down without a sweat.

"Why don't you try this on for size!" mocking the bullies as they fell to the ground.

Everyone was shocked, the teacher from class came to see what all the noise was about and saw all the bullies on the ground battered and bruised. The bell rang and it was time for another class and the teacher just hurried the children back to class.

All the students were whispering about the fight, they couldn't believe how much the boy had changed from when they last saw him.

"I heard his family went to Brazil for the summer, it must have changed him" one student whispered to another, not knowing that the boy and girl had swapped places.

The girl was happy that she was able to help and gain the respect from the other students for the boy and the fear from the bullies so they wouldn't mess with him again.

Back at the orphanage the children sprang into action. They made spooky noises and moved objects around, pretending that the orphanage was haunted. The crooks were terrified, and they quickly ran off, vowing never to come back. All whilst dodging all the other adults so he wouldn't be taken either.

The boy and the children were thrilled by their success, and they couldn't stop laughing and congratulating each other. They knew that they had pulled off a bold and creative plan, and they were grateful to have been able to protect the orphanage and each other. And as they sat down to celebrate their victory, the boy knew that he had found a group of friends who would always be there for him, no matter what. He was pleased that he was able to save his friends and the girls family from a horrible life at the factory.

It was dark again, time to swap back and time for bed. The girl and boy made their way to the window and told each other of their accomplishments, both grateful for one another for their help.

As they were about to swap back through the window they noticed that it was stuck. She pushed and pulled, but it wouldn't budge.

The boy, who was waiting on the other side, tried to help her, but it was no use. The window was stuck fast.

"What are we going to do?" the girl asked, panic starting to set in.

"I don't know," the boy replied, looking equally worried. "We can't stay here, but I don't think we can get through the window either."

They tried everything they could think of to open the window, but it wouldn't budge. As the hours ticked by, they realized that they were stuck in each other's worlds, unable to return to their own.

The girl was devastated. She had loved being able to experience the outside world and all the freedom and possibility it offered. And now, she feared that she could no longer return to her own life, she thought about her fellow orphans and how they are her family and that may never see them again.

The boy, on the other hand, was terrified. He had never been confined to the orphanage before, and he didn't know how he was going to survive there. He missed his own life and the freedom he had taken for granted.

Then suddenly the window disappeared before their eyes, losing sight of each other. They were stuck in each others bodies, the window had gone and now they can no longer see each other. What are they going to do? they both thought to themselves.

It was hopeless, they didn't even have each other. Days had passed living in each others worlds with no way of swapping back. As each day went passed they grew more and more desperate. More so just to see each others face again.

Missing each other and their homes deeply they both had the same thought that they believed could bring them a bit of comfort. They decided to find their homes. Even though she was from the past and he was from the future its possible that even though their homes may not be around, they could still find the place of were it would be.

The boy pulled out an old map from the orphanages small library and the girl did the same from the boys fathers office. They then began their journey home.

It was a long journey, difficult for the girl as she wasn't sure how to use transport and even harder for the boy as their wasn't any transport back then. They both seeked help from passers by most shuued them away but, a few people were helpful.

A nice old man with a donkey and carriage full of oats offered to help the boy if the boy promised to help him unload the oats when they got to the boys destination.

The girl had a hard time finding the correct help, at the train station she noticed someone familar. It was the boy she stopped the bullies from hitting with a ruler. She went to him and finally found someone to help her get to to her destination.

Finally after what seemed like hours they made it. The girl saw what once was her home of an old lady. She explained to the old lady that she used to live here and asked her if she could look around for a short while.

"That would be impossible" the old lady said confused "This house has been in my family for generations and I've lived here my whole life but, your welcome to look around"

The old lady began to give her the tour, explaining the history of the house that the girl already knew, after all it was her history. The girl just remained quiet, looking around and reminiscing about her orphan siblings and her life at the orphanage.

I made that crack in that wall playing whack the weasel with the other children she thought to her self as she ran her fingers across it.

"Its a shame its going to be knocked down, Beautiful house but its going to become my daughters and she's going to rebuild it" the old lady said sadly.

They walked up the hall and their she saw the door of the room with the window were she met the boy. She Ran to it as quick as she could hoping that it may be their again.

Mean while the boy was unloading oats from the old mans carriage, he was a mile away from where his house would be. He finished and the old man gave him an apple as thanks and the boy carried on his journey. He kept walking wondering what he might find, what could be in the place of his home now. He kept walking until he saw, there was nothing. Just grass with one big tree in the middle. He walked up to the tree, tossing his apple up and down and catching it in his hand. He began crying, hitting the tree begging to go home over and over. His head kneeling on the tree.

The girl had made it to the room but the window wasn't there. Its no use, she thought. She knelt her head in the place where the window was.

"I just want to be myself again" they both whispered.

Suddenly they both fell, the window had re-appeared between them and they were themselves again. Back where they belonged! finally they could see each other again. They were so happy they thought they wouldn't be able to see each other ever again.

They were both grateful for the window but had discovered were they truly belonged and their own self worth. They vowed never to swap again and thanked each other, they both taught each other many things that will forever change them.

They knew that this would be the last time that they would ever made each other a promise. The girl would burry pictures and reminders of the orphanage children for the boy to find so that even though he couldn't be with his new friends anymore he could still see them. And the boy vowed that he would save her house and make it a happy home for children just like them. They both had faith in each other to keep to their promises and the window then vanished.

The girl did as she vowed and hid little keep sakes from all of the children, including letters from them as she told them the truth of what happened so the boy would not be forgotten. And they boy did as he vowed, grew up and found the orphanage and bought the house and turned it into a foster care house where he'd help and protect children and bring them happiness just as he did during his time in the orphanage.

The boy found the keep sake the girl had hidden and looked through all the pictures, letters, trinkets from the girl and the orphanage children. Tears in his eyes as he held them close to his heart.

Even as time went by it was clear, they never forgot about each other.

THE END.
