To My Hero

Not all heroes wear capes

I may seem a little cliché, but I would have to say that the biggest hero in my life is my sister. She has saved me multiple times without realizing it and was practically my mom for most of my life. I wouldn't be who I am today without her and I could never thank her enough.

So to my absolutely fantastic sister out there, most of my life we have not gotten along. With a six-year age difference, we didn't really see eye-to-eye on anything and I was always into the "baby" stuff. It took me a long time, but I've definitely grown up. I felt like I was on my own almost my entire life, but when I needed it your were always there for me. When the mean kid broke my glasses on the bus, you were prepared to defend me from the minute you found out. Our other sister dragged you through so much, even bullying me. I'm glad that you finally got to see through her facade to give me a chance.

We have grown so close recently and I will say, it is so weird to actually feel like I have a sibling. Through the abuse and manipulation that she put you through, you have stood up for yourself and stopped letting her control you. I am so proud to have you as my sister and I hope that we can continue to grow closer together. You have shown me what it is to have a family and I'm excited for our new little sister circle that is constantly growing. You have taught me to never give up and to search for those in my life who can make a real family.

Even with our mom siding with her, we have managed to keep part of our crazy family together. I don't know what I would do without you. You have warned me about many things, and I wish I would have listened more. You tried to save me from so much hurt and you still do. I appreciate everything you have done for me and I hope one day that mom could appreciate you, too. Especially since you are pretty much the entire reason that she even has that house. You were put into so much debt and yet you still stand tall and keep moving forward. I have absolutely no idea how you have been able to do it all these years.

You were the mom when you shouldn't have had to be. You were the one taking care of or niece and nephew when you didn't ever really want to have kids. You were the one who would stand up for me when our own parents didn't seem to care. You are a huge inspiration to me and are a huge reason that I'm still here to write this. There were many times that I wanted to end the pain I've gone through, but I knew that if you could do it when you've been through worse, I could too. Now I'm happily married and trying for a child of my own. You challenged me to be who I am now.

It took twenty-two years for us to have a decent relationship, but I am so glad that we finally do. You definitely deserve the title of hero, and I hate that most people that you have helped have turned on you. Just know that your baby sister has watched it all and you are a huge part of who I am today. I love you.

Even though you'll probably never get to see this, I hope you know that your baby sister will always be here for you.

Much love,

Your crazy sibling
