The Importance of Family in Manuja Madawa Hewawasam Personal and Professional LifeFamily
Manuja Hewawasam

Family is the essential part that develops in an individual most. Manuja Madawa Hewawasam finds it the grounding upon which his values rest, the beacon from which he derives his life direction. Son of Handru Piyasena Hewawasam and Geekiyanage Seetha Perera, Manuja was born into a household filled with love and respect. His family background has left an indelible mark on his approach to life and work, as in the following context, blending compassion with ambition.
That was nothing out of the ordinary for Manuja since his tender years, as he squarely puts it: "My folks have had a better influence on my character". It is his father, Handru Piyasena Hewawasam, that he says helped him understand what hard work and endurance truly mean. Whether it be listening to one of his many stories about getting through a situation or simply watching how he conducted his life, Manuja learned that in perseverance lay success.
His mother, Geekiyanage Seetha Perera, was more of an emotional strength. She instilled in him the art of empathy and connecting with people. Both these lessons from his parents formed the bedrock for his later ventures, especially in healthcare, where empathy and patience are a must.
They both taught him to strike the perfect balance between pragmatism and compassion, something which essentially reflects in his administration pattern as an entrepreneur, particularly when inducted into setting up Royal Nursing Home. That ability of his to lead with a fine blend of head and heart directly and definitely comes from parental inculcating. Besides serving as great inspirers for Manuja on his enterprise path, his family has always stood steady for him and acted as his supporting pillars, helping him sustain with every difficulty or hard time his enterprises faced since he initiated the small industry. And behind every milestone he achieved was the quiet, unending encouragement of his family.
As a husband, Manuja speaks often about the partnership he shares with his wife. For him, marriage is a source of balance. When work becomes overwhelming, family moments help ground him. His wife's belief in his vision gave him the confidence to take risks, knowing that someone is always there to stand by him, no matter the outcome.
Becoming a father brought another dimension to his life. It is through fatherhood that Manuja has learned the value of patience and the art of prioritizing. "It isn't about building a legacy now, but about setting an example," he says. His children remind him day in and day out of why he tries to make a difference in not only his personal life but also in the professional world.
The importance of the family will not be kept to Manuja's personal domain; it transfers into the way he does his business. At Royal Nursing Home, a homely atmosphere accorded to its residents is basically emulating the life he led in a loving home. Manuja understands that for many elderly people, coming to a care facility can be a very overwhelming experience and may even feel like leaving their families behind. About him, it has always been to build an environment where the residents are treated with esteem and importance, like one would get at home. And he is applying this very philosophy to his staff,
too. Manuja often refers to the team at Royal Nursing Home as being like an extended family. That's why a sense of belonging for him among the employees is so crucial for giving quality care. He does this with respect and by showing compassion toward his team; thus, that is passed down to the residents they serve. Life isn't all easy, and trying to balance out personal and professional commitments is a tall order. Manuja says there are days when the lines blur between work and home life. Yet, he sees these moments as opportunities to grow.
Probably the most important things he has come to realize concern the need for good communication. That be it sitting with his team, brainstorming a new business approach, or putting quality time in with his family, he is there, present and accounted for. He's also learned that there is value in learning to delegate-really understanding that he will not be able to do all things. That realization really freed him to concentrate on what's truly important, both in the workplace and outside it.
As Manuja continues to build his career, he remains very attached to the values his family has taught him. He sees his work as a way to honor their influence, ensuring that the principles of kindness, resilience, and community live on in the impact he creates.
To Manuja, family is not just a comforting factor; it's the very force. It is what keeps him level-headed at highs and resilient at lows. Be it decisions that he makes as a business leader or those quiet evenings with his children, lessons learnt from parents, wife, and being a father always guide him through.
In many ways, Manuja's life story testifies to the enduring power of family: a story of how values one inherits shape one's choices, and in turn, create ripples that touch the lives of others. For Manuja, his family isn't just part of his story-it's at the heart of everything he does.
