The beginning of the end

Chapter One: Growing up

By yasir ahmidPublished about a year ago 6 min read

In a place secluded from the world, where the sounds of civilization never reach and the marks of progress remain unseen, lies a mysterious city, encircled by three massive walls, each larger and taller than the one before it. The walls are arranged in a perfect circle around the city, and it is said that behind each wall lies a secret known only to a few wise elders. These walls give the city an impenetrable appearance, as if it harbors something of great value or perhaps a profound mystery that its inhabitants fear might escape into the world.

At the heart of this city lives a boy named Adam. Fourteen years old, tall for his age, with thick brown hair and eyes the color of the sky before dusk, a blend of blue and gray that holds a touch of enigma. Adam is imbued with a spirit of adventure and curiosity, always questioning the strange nature of the city and the secrets hidden behind the three walls.

Ptolemy, Adam’s closest friend, is a thirteen-year-old boy. Shorter than Adam, with silky black hair and sharp, intelligent eyes that seem to gleam with insight. Ptolemy often gives the impression that he knows more than he lets on, and he is considered one of the smartest boys in the city. Despite the age difference, Ptolemy regards Adam as an older brother and feels comfortable and secure in his presence.

Their other friend, Alexander, is also fourteen years old. Strong and sturdy from the hard labor he performs with his father in the fields surrounding the second wall, Alexander is known for his calm and patient demeanor, yet he possesses a kind heart and an unwavering loyalty to his friends. His hair is golden like sunlight, and his eyes are the warm color of honey, giving him an innocent appearance, though those who know him well are aware of the inner strength he carries.

The city itself is surrounded by a mysterious landscape. The trees grow in strange, twisted shapes, their branches interwoven as if they hold within them an ancient story yet untold. At night, the wind howls through these trees, whispering eerie sounds that seem to tell the secrets of the three walls. The atmosphere in the city is always thick with gray clouds, as if the sun refuses to fully reveal itself, lending the city an air of confinement and unease. The air carries a distinctive scent, a mix of moisture and dew, with a hint of something unexplainable, perhaps the city’s secret.

In this enigmatic place, Adam and his friends live, striving to understand the world around them, and attempting to uncover the hidden truths behind the three walls. Adam always feels that something awaits him beyond the barriers, a great secret that will change his life and the lives of his friends forever.

As the sun began its descent, casting a warm, orange glow over the city, Adam noticed something unusual. Beyond the towering walls, thin wisps of smoke curled up into the sky, their dark tendrils stark against the fading light. His heart skipped a beat. Smoke was not something they usually saw, not in a place so tightly controlled and isolated.

"Do you see that?" Adam whispered, his voice tinged with both excitement and fear, pointing towards the distant smoke.

Ptolemy and Alexander followed his gaze, their expressions quickly mirroring Adam’s concern.

Without a second thought, the three boys exchanged determined glances and began to run, their feet pounding against the cobblestones as they made their way towards the first wall. The air seemed to thicken with every step they took, the mystery of the smoke pulling them closer to whatever secret lay beyond the barriers that had always kept them safe—or so they thought.

When Adam and his friends reached the first wall, the scene before them was one of chaos and fear. The guards, usually stoic and composed, were in a state of panic, shouting orders and rushing to close the massive gate. The sight was startling; the gate hadn’t been shut in years, always standing open as a symbol of the city's safety and control.

“Go back home!” one of the guards yelled, his voice strained with urgency. But Adam didn’t listen. Something deep inside him drove him forward, compelling him to uncover the truth behind the smoke and the panic.

Ignoring the desperate cries of the guards, Adam signaled to his friends and led them toward a small, almost hidden door he knew about—one that was used by the guards for quick access. As they approached, a dreadful silence fell over them, and Adam’s heart pounded in his chest, louder than ever before.

They reached the door, and what they found froze them in their tracks. The guards who were supposed to be stationed there were lying lifeless on the ground, their bodies twisted in unnatural ways, covered in blood. It was a scene of pure horror, the brutality of the attack evident in the deep wounds that marred their bodies.

Adam, Ptolemy, and Alexander stood there, paralyzed by the gruesome sight, as the reality of the danger they were facing sank in with terrifying clarity. When they arrived, they found that all the guards had been brutally killed.

Adam and his friends, after mustering the courage to move past the gruesome scene, entered the small door. The sight of the slaughtered guards still lingered in their minds, but they pressed on, driven by a mix of fear and determination. Once inside the wall, they made their way towards the stairs that led to the top of the wall.

As they neared the staircase, something caught their eye. Emerging from the shadows was a creature unlike anything they had ever seen. It was a twisted, grotesque being with a hunched posture, yet its presence was imposing. Its body was covered in pale, leathery skin that stretched over sinewy muscles, giving it a look of raw, primal strength.

Its limbs were long and gangly, but there was a terrifying power in the way it moved. The creature’s hands ended in sharp, claw-like fingers, and its eyes glowed with a malevolent hunger. Its face was a grotesque mask of jagged teeth, twisted into a snarl that revealed its predatory nature. Saliva dripped from its gaping maw as it advanced toward the boys, intent on making them its next meal.

The creature lunged at them with terrifying speed, its sharp claws slashing through the air. Adam, Ptolemy, and Alexander barely had time to react before they were forced into a desperate struggle for their lives. The creature was relentless, its movements quick and savage, every swipe of its claws filled with lethal intent.

Alexander, strong and brave, took the lead in the fight. He grabbed a discarded spear from one of the fallen guards and charged at the creature, striking at it with all his might. But the creature was resilient, its leathery skin tough and difficult to pierce. It snarled in rage, knocking the spear aside with a powerful swipe and sending Alexander stumbling back.

Ptolemy, always quick to think, tried to distract the creature, throwing rocks and shouting to divert its attention. But the creature seemed unfazed, its focus locked on the three boys as it advanced with murderous intent.

In a frantic attempt to protect his friends, Alexander charged again, this time managing to land a blow that made the creature stagger. But the victory was short-lived. With a roar of anger, the creature struck back, its claws raking across Alexander’s chest and sending him crashing to the ground.

As Alexander lay there, struggling to regain his breath, the creature loomed over him, preparing to deliver the final, fatal blow. Its claws raised high, ready to strike, when suddenly, something extraordinary happened.

Adam, who had been paralyzed by fear, felt a surge of energy course through him. His eyes began to glow with an otherworldly light, a bright, intense gleam that filled him with a power he had never felt before. Without thinking, driven by pure instinct, he rushed towards the fallen guards. His hand found the hilt of a sword, one that had belonged to a guard now lying lifeless on the ground.

With a burst of speed, Adam charged at the creature, the sword gripped tightly in his hands. The creature, now towering over Alexander, didn’t see him coming. In one swift, determined motion, Adam leaped into the air, aiming for the creature’s head. With all his strength, he swung the sword in a wide arc, and the blade found its mark.

The creature’s head separated from its body, the monstrous form collapsing to the ground with a thud. Adam landed beside it, breathing heavily, the sword still clutched in his trembling hands. The glow in his eyes began to fade, replaced by a look of shock at what he had just done.

Alexander, still lying on the ground, looked up at Adam with a mixture of awe and relief. The creature was dead, its threat vanquished, but the boys knew this was only the beginning of something far more dangerous and mysterious than they had ever imagined.
