The Creepiest Unsolved Mysteries in Existence
on the morning of June 30th 1908 the sky lit up with fire an explosion one thousand times larger than Hiroshima took place in the sky above the tunguska river in northern Siberia a shock wave was sent across Asia and Europe with Windows shattering hundreds of miles away millions of trees were felled stripped of their bark and burnt to a crisp this would become known as the tunguska incident but what happened witnesses to the incident and its aftermath found roughly 830 square miles of forest completely destroyed and burnt one account noted the sky split in two and fire appeared high and wide over the forest the split in the sky grew larger the entire Northern side was covered with fire at that moment I became so hot that I couldn't bear it as if my shirt was on fire it was one of the largest explosions in recorded history larger than nuclear explosions of today but the nuclear bomb wouldn't be invented for another 37 years while eyewitness accounts are heavily lacking to the actual event largely due to the remoteness of the region it took place in scientists who studied the aftermath theorized that this was a massive air burst of an asteroid roughly 200 feet in diameter based on the large swaths of Destruction it's estimated that the asteroid was traveling at sixty thousand miles per hour over the surface of the Earth traveling at such a high rate of speed meant that when the asteroid of the this size hit the denser lower atmosphere it exploded into billions of tiny pieces all burning up at roughly 45 000 degrees Fahrenheit this theory is the only one that properly explains the destruction found as a result of the tunguska event but the story gets even more worrying researchers studying the object in its subsequent destruction estimate that an event of this size and scale could take place roughly every 200 to 300 years meaning that the odds of another tunguska event which could completely destroy any modern day City is likely within our lifetimes this noise perplexed scientists for over a decade that noise was heard by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or NOAA in 1997 and it bewildered researchers for years the sound was heard in a very remote portion of the Pacific Ocean near the southern tip of South America and was detected by several hydrophone arrays hydrophones are essentially underwater microphones and the NOAA had several series of them set up autonomously to capture mysterious sounds just like this the first autonomous array was used in the Cold War to detect Soviet submarines usually researchers would use the sounds recorded to learn about seismic activity and marine animals but the mysterious bloop was something different the NOAA described the noise as rising rapidly in frequency over about one minute and was of sufficient amplitude you to be heard at a range of over five thousand kilometers or three thousand miles from its origin if it originated from the central United States you would be able to hear it at the northern tip of Canada or all the way down in Colombia this was a massive noise the noaa's chief researcher at the time Dr Christopher Fox didn't believe that the origin of the bloop was man-made nor that it was a result of a volcano or an earthquake Fox believed that the audio profile of the bloop resembled a large living creature a creature that makes a deafening bloop sound even with this assumption and the gathered data Fox stated that the source would remain a mystery primarily because the amplitude of the noise far exceeded the capabilities of any known animal on earth researchers began speculating that the noise may have been a result of ice calving in Antarctica but many still held onto the idea that it was made by some creature including the noaa's lead researcher Dr Fox this lingering hypothesis led to years of speculation by the public and even led to the animal Theory coming to a scientific consensus in 2002 still researchers continued to question the noise as scientists continued analyzing the spectrogram of the bloop they started to match up key points with similar spectrograms of ice Quakes recorded elsewhere in the world the idea that the bloop came from animal origin slowly crumbled as researchers matched up much of its spectrographic variability with observances in other ice calving events oceanographer Dr Yun bozi noted that the waveforms of the sound's origin could have easily been influenced by angular frequency dependent radiation patterns associated with anti-symmetric mode motion of ice cover in plain English the bloop sound could be a result of the original noise being distorted as it propagated through ice cover by 2012 the idea of an animal that would have created such a sound faded in the scientific Community decided that the bloop was made by ice calving in Antarctica this ultimate conclusion wasn't accepted by many around the world and it continues to be the center of many pop culture conspiracy theories such as the existence of mermaids or top-secret nuclear explosions [Music] the day is August 7th 1994 and it had begun to rain except it wasn't rain it was a gelatinous goo filled with blood cells this is the story of Oakville Washington population 665. the torrent of Goo spread across 20 square miles and it wasn't innocuous instead it brought a sort of plague to the town of Oakville killing animals pets and making people incredibly sick the blobs would Reign from the sky over a period of three weeks falling on six confirmed separate times reports from the town at the time stated that everyone in the whole town came down with something like the flu lasting seven weeks to two or three months there were even reports of animals dying in such quantities that in some areas you could see several at a time laying about residents described the substance as a mushy-like Jello after the first instance many began to speculate forms of military testing or other uncommon scenarios so samples were sent off to the Washington Department of Health a microbiologist by the name of Mike McDowell reviewed the samples and in an interview with National Geographic he claimed his lab found two living organisms pseudomonas fluorescence and enterobacter cloacai both of these organisms could lead to severe illness in mammals but McDowell also claimed that the samples his lab had disappeared one day and even after filing various reports they were never found so what made the Oakville blobs some believe it was pieces of jellyfish swept up and disintegrated in military testing miles away others believed the blobs to be waste from airplanes but the FAA was quick to refute this claim others believe including former Oakville residents that the blobs were man-made and the small town of Oakville was chosen as the test site for some form of experiment the issue with getting to the bottom of the Oakville blob incident is that all of the original samples of the blobs have vanished so no further testing can be completed [Music] in March 1999 NOAA the U.S National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration heard this sound it was loud enough that it was heard over the entire Pacific Ocean in a range of roughly about 3 000 miles captured on an array of underwater microphones called hydrophones that Noah uses to listen to underwater events so what made this sound no one knows for sure the sound lasted for a total of 15 seconds and it's believed to have originated somewhere around Cape Adair off the tip of Antarctica researchers generally think that the sound was an iceberg Breaking Free or rubbing against other ice or stone around the continent but some aren't sure some people online have even claimed that the NASA 33a5 Imaging satellite picked up a large underwater shadow in the region at the time of the sound but for the most part this appears to be conspiracy and misinformation has no official documentation from NASA at least and more exists on the claim so what do you think made the Julia was it an iceberg or was it a giant sea creature we may never know [Music] there's a mysterious radio signal that's been broadcasting since the 1970s that sounds like a repeating buzzing with occasional Russian voices it's long been thought to be a Russian KGB spy Channel or a dead hand signal that if silenced could trigger the start of World War III but it gets weirder earlier this year it started broadcasting popular music like Gangnam Style or sounds that when analyzed under spectrograph look like memes so who or what is behind this mysterious Russian station experts believe the station has been broadcasting since the early 1970s on the am frequency of 4625 kilohertz [Music] [Applause] [Music] for about the last 50 years the station has been the same signal repeating 24 hours per day but there have been exceptions like in 2010 when the frequency played solid tone for one minute exactly then changed how long the tones were ever since or like in 2003 when the tone pattern in frequency changed mysteriously but changing tones isn't very exciting after all this could just be a side effect of some Machinery The Mystery of the tone largely comes from the seemingly random other sounds that accompany the buzzing there's frequently Russian voices speaking that broadcast in three formats monolith uzor or Commander so what are these codes and the creepier part is that often there's unintentional broadcasts at least seemingly like distant conversations or background noises around the buzzer like what was heard in November of 2001 this is what was said I am 143 not receiving the generator that stuff comes from the hardware room in September of 2010 the mystery deepened when broadcasts in Russian had portions of Tchaikovsky Swan Lake and finally at the beginning of 2022 there started to be spectrogram images and popular songs connected to internet memes due to the abnormal nature of these broadcasts some actually do believe that earlier this year the station was hijacked by Pirates even with all of these Clues and interesting facts no one really knows the purpose of the station some have speculated that it's actually a dead hand signal for the Russian state for if it were to ever stop broadcasting their nukes would launch the largest swath of observers though believed that the station was initially intended to send Russian spy Communications at the height of the USSR and the Cold War but whether that's still its function we may never know there are of course more mundane explanations like observing changes in Earth's ionosphere or simply as a radio detector signal but where is it coming from followers of the signal first narrowed it down to be coming from povarovo Russia coming from these coordinates about 10 kilometers Northwest of Moscow however it moved in 2010 to St Petersburg near a small village in the outskirts of the city there have been accounts of urban explorers finding abandoned military bases that had radio video logs of broadcasting the signal but these are unconfirmed by experts while there are any number of explanations the station is believed to most likely be controlled by the Russian State and used for some kind of governmental or military purpose what do you think is behind the uvb-76 mystery [Music] there's a sound coming from the Pacific Ocean that hasn't stopped since 1991 and it sounds like this foreign what would you do if you poked your head underwater and heard that the sound named upsweep has appeared on underwater microphones or hydrophones since the U.S Navy's sosus sonar array began recording in August of 1991. at its core the sound is a series of upsweeping sounds that last for several minutes and repeat forever or seemingly the interesting thing is that the sound fluctuates based on the seasons and is large enough to be heard from nearly anywhere in the Pacific a moment of silence for all of the fish that have to listen to this every day the source sound has been pinpointed to be around 54 degrees south and 140 degrees west and researchers think that the sound is due to volcanic activity but really aren't sure as no one has ever exactly found what's making the noise online sluice of course think that the noise is coming from something much more ominous whatever it is it's incredibly creepy what do you think's behind the upsweep sound a secret submarine base a giant monster or is it just a giant volcano that could explode and destroy the Earth who knows I'm I'm sure it's nothing to worry about [Music] the blaring Horn of the hersperous could be heard across the aisle but there was no answer the hersperous a lighthouse relief tender was here to swap Crews for the flannon Isle lighthouse on the 26th of December 1900. for it was just 11 days earlier that the transatlantic steamer The Arc tour had sailed by the lighthouse and noticed that the light was off something was wrong the northern Lighthouse board wasn't able to dispatch the hersperous until the 26th to check on their crew due to adverse weather in the region the horn now blaring was met with no answer from Shore a flare was sent up but again no response Lighthouse Keeper Joseph Moore was selected to set off from the hersperous to make it ashore climbing 160 waves swept steps up the rocky Cliffs to the lighthouse as Joseph entered the lighthouse compound he noticed a clock it wasn't ticking turning next to the table it was set for a meal that was never eaten the chairs toppled over but there was sign of life a lone Canary in its cage Moore returned to the Eastern Landing where the hersperous was docked to report his findings two additional Sailors were sent ashore to look for further Signs of Life the sailors searched the entire complex turning up nothing but one pair of oil skins a tire the lighthouse Keepers were supposed to wear when leaving the compound the three Sailors were searching for three men James ducat Thomas Marshall and Donald MacArthur but after searching the flan and Lighthouse complexes East Side the search then turned to the West they found smashed Supply boxes with contents strewn about bent iron railings Railway track torn from its Concrete in much of the turf on the Cliffside had been ripped about but no signs of life the three men had vanished the captain of the hersperous would send this message to command after the three searching Sailors had returned poor fellows they must have blown over the cliffs or drowned trying to secure a crane or something like that the herspers returned to the mainland leaving behind the sailors to tend to the job of their now missing companions on the 29th of December the head of the northern Lighthouse board Robert Muirhead arrived to the lighthouse to investigate Robert's Theory became that Marshall and ducat had headed out into the storm to secure equipment after they didn't return in a timely fashion he believed MacArthur who the oil skin belonged to then ventured out to find them Robert believed all three men were swept out to sea he stated in his report that all men had been on duty up until December 15th when that evening The Disappearance occurred however the public at the time wasn't as quick to believe the story of Mir head stories of sea monsters of course circulated the local towns or perhaps that the men had been kidnapped by a foreign vessel many also believed perhaps likely that MacArthur known to be a quick tempered man had murdered the two other Sailors then throwing himself off the cliff after completing the act the real reason these men were never seen again will likely never be known as it persists to be one of the most perplexing disappearances in Maritime history [Music] in May of 1997 this sound was heard Deep in the Pacific Ocean over thousands of miles [Laughter] that was the sound played at 16x speed but it gets even creepier when it's played in real time watch till the end of this video to listen to that named slow down by researchers it was recorded by Noah or the U.S National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on their array of underwater microphones it was given its ominous name because it decreases in frequency over about seven minutes and the creepier part is that the sound wasn't recorded just once it reportedly happens about three times per year at varying times it can also be heard across thousands of miles in the Pacific and this is perhaps one of the most mysterious underwater sounds due to its unique audio structure researchers at NOAA your Isaac could be caused by friction between sliding ice sheets and land in Antarctica but have no real way to confirm that this is the true Source whatever is making the sound it's absolutely massive and still around somewhere in the Pacific as the sounds keep happening what do you think is causing the Slowdown to repeat every few months while you think about that let's play the sound in real time
