parents
The boundless love a parent has for their child is matched only by their capacity to embarrass them.
The Things We Share
I never thought I looked much like my mother. She was naturally a very light blonde with stick straight, fine hair and blue eyes. While my hair wasn’t as dark and coarse as my then bald father, it was brown and wavy with a mind of its own when I’d bother to brush it. No one ever thought we were related. I had a few blonde friends and if we were out anywhere together, strangers would assume that one of them was her daughter. Our body types were pretty different. I was taller, awkwardly lanky, flat chested. She was more of what I thought of as ‘normal’ proportionally, never worrying about sleeves being too short, bangles sliding off her wrists or strapless dresses having nothing to hold them up. Her rings and bracelets would never fit if I’d wanted to borrow them. But she was more into gold and I preferred silver back then. We wore the same size shoe but her feet were wider so we rarely could share those either.

Hi Mom...
it's me, your child. Sometimes it's hard for me to show you how much I love you. I have a hard time understanding things you're asking of me, but the more I think about it, the more your actions made sense . I know you're only trying to help me because you want me to have a better future. You forgave me for a lot when I was younger. I remember getting into some situations where you would grounding me, but your love always won in the end. Now I realize that you were only trying to protect me back then.

My Young Daughter Set a Boundary and I Respected It
My daughter and I have always been tight. Best friends, each other’s biggest supporters and fans. We’ve had a wonderful relationship. I’ve almost never let her down in the 17 years that we’ve been together. However, I’ll never forget the day she taught me a lesson in parenting.

A Mom Who Doesn't Know What to do Anymore
I remember when I was younger, I used to go through the store with my parents and I would always see a child who would talk back to their parents and throw tantrums. My parents always said, that's a white kid attitude or that's what white kids did. I always felt sorry for the parents, I could see the frustration on their faces. Now I am a mother and I now have that child.

The Advice of my Mother
"I think you have to duplicate yourself, by showing them respect as a mother and as a friend. That makes it easier for your daughter to come to you about anything. Your daughter should always know that ‘Mommy is my friend, but she is also my mom. That means I need to have a certain respect for her.’ That is why we talk about everything, MJ. I think you and your sister would talk to me before you talk to your girlfriends. And I believe our relationship is contagious to other people, and that allows people to be free around us as well.
