parents
The boundless love a parent has for their child is matched only by their capacity to embarrass them.
It’s just a rough week
This week has been tough. My daughter has decided that naps are the worst thing in the world. But then she gets overtired and super fussy and cranky, and her cortisol levels are way too high, so she refuses naps even more. It’s a vicious cycle that my husband and I are desperately trying to break, because this week was supposed to be focused on getting her to sleep independently. Well, independent sleep can’t exactly happen when sleep isn’t happening.

No More Thanksgivings
It was 2012 in a tiny, rural county on the western border of South Carolina called McCormick. I was brought in that year for a multitude of reasons, but for the sake of this story, I was there because McCormick’s high school football team needed an offensive playcaller, and I was looking to enhance my resume with some coordinating experience, so it was a nice, symbiotic pairing that year. And while I would like to think that it was singularly me who came in and changed the program around, the truth is that I found myself in a wonderfully fortuitous situation. The head coach was in his second year, a defensive guy who needed someone to take the weight of offense off of him. Despite winning only three games the year before, he had laid a pretty solid foundation that year for what was to be a huge step forward in the program in the future. And, most importantly, we had the horses.

When The Lights Go Out. Top Story - December 2022.
I see you, mama. Your unwashed hair tied loosely in a chaotic bun. Dark circles and bags ringed beneath your tired eyes, the energy you reserved for your appearance repurposed to surviving till nap time. Your sweatpants and loose t-shirt still bear yesterday's stains, maybe even the days' before that. Even now, the laundry shoots its accusing glare as it continues to pile, unwashed, unfolded. You never imagined it could be this hard, this exhausting, this monotonous.

Fox News Can I Have My Parents Back Now Please?
Author's preface: This is a repost of an article I published on an alternate yet eerily similar web publishing platform way back in 2017. It includes an addendum I later made to it in response to my own serious concerns about the way my parents were portrayed. I am republishing this now along with a companion post that is linked here because I think that together the two articles make for a compelling story. One (this one) a lighthearted and humorous tale that I ended up very much regretting, and the other, which describes why I felt that way and what I tried to do about it. Incidentally I already wrote and submitted this story to Vocal about a month ago. It has languished in "awaiting review" purgatory ever since. I finally got tired of waiting and am re-submitting to a different community or whatever dumb thing they call them.

Christmas At The Cabin
We drove up the snowy, winding road towards the cozy A- frame cabin. My mind floods with memories of being a little girl again screaming, laughing, and playing in the snow. Mom would bound my siblings and I really tight we could scarcely breath. Layer our hands with mittens making sure not an inch of us was left uncovered. Dad would pick up the younger ones and put them front seat of the old blue truck. Us older ones clamored in the back. Off we were. First to haul in wood was, cut, loaded, and unloaded by the back door we would all clamor back in including mom, and go pick out the perfect tree.
