Family and Friends
I don't know if I would call this a story. It's about a person that I know that has been through a great ordeal in the past while and in the recovery process is finding out who the true friends and family really are. They are known as the black sheep of the family, shunned by others for who they are or are not, they are there to help when needed but when you require help they are nowhere to be seen.

Sadness Gains Courage
”Did you know?” “We had no idea, we could have stopped this evilness a long time ago. A wide smile, golden hair like the colour of the bright sun rising in the morning. Those hazel eyes just melted your soul. The sweetest little girl you ever could have known.

The Compound
In 2019 my family moved into a place that we were really excited about, although I have to admit I was a bit embarrassed by how it looked on the outside. Four dingy looking buildings all facing each other, connected by a big piece of grass. Several families all essentially sharing a backyard? Imagine the drama that must come with this arrangement! It'll do for now, I thought. But the truth is, what it actually would end up doing, I could never have anticipated.

The Cross Dresser
Crossing on the ferry from Oban to Craignure I can see it, a swirling sea mist lifting from the lower fells, licking its way up the rugged, rose-pink granite face of Ben More mountain where it hangs like a shroud till noon. I grew up on the Isle of Mull, restricted in my youth, punished to live on one side of the island while the rest of human life lived on the other. Ours was the only farm on the western shoreline. On the east side, white cottages with chocolate box thatched roofs littered the fells inside a checker board of dry stone walls.

The Smiling Clam Meets the Tiny Finger
My father always had an incredible sense of humor. None of us were sure how he developed this as his own parents were a somber pair and had the outward appearance of those people that you see in 19th century photographs staring out as though they see the guillotine about to come down on their necks. Somehow he was able to overcome this limitation and develop his own wry view of the world which never ceased to surprise.

Zig Zag # 10
Family. When most people see or hear that word, they think of their family of origin. The family hand of cards they were dealt. The family they were assigned without being consulted. That kind of family can be a slippery slope to navigate even in the best of circumstances.

Oh My Olga's Goodies
Years ago, I was at a friend’s house visiting her grandmother during winter break from college. At that time, after dinner, she served us a homemade chocolate cake. Not for anything, but this was the best chocolate cake I had ever tasted. Her grandmother refused to give us the recipe. It was not for lack of trying; we begged her often throughout the week we were there.
