fact or fiction
Is it fact or merely fiction? Fact or Fiction explores the myths and beliefs we hold about our family dynamics, traditions, and if there's such thing as a 'perfect family.'
Marigolds
We used to tease her, my sister and I. You never knew what you would find coming home on the school bus. Leaving in the morning only to return with bright purple shutters and door on the house one day, or an aqua kitchen the next. My mom loved color. The more, the merrier, she would say. She let us pick out what colors we wanted our rooms to be. I chose hot pink. My sister went with bright purple. Gold carpet and a green sofa adorned the living room, and red took over the dining room.

Summer Nights
It all began with a night stroll along the harbour on a magical summer night. People everywhere, enjoying our beautiful harbour views. Children riding bikes and skateboarding along the pier. Sounds of music, laughter, and chattering blaring as we passed by the restaurants and boats that were docked. The fishermen along the wharves doing what they do best. The smell and breeze of the ocean were so fresh and soothing. Everyone around seemed so happy and relaxed. We stopped at an ice cream cart to get some ice cream. They were selling glowsticks as well and Marigold flower necklaces. I picked up a necklace for my daughter and placed it around her neck, the colour so bright just like the sunset. We grabbed our ice creams and continued our walk, singing out loud our favourite songs.

Pygmalion Marigold. Top Story - August 2021.
She hoped there would be more time, but a small part of her was already quite sure that Norman would never wake to his favorite sound again. The unpleasant whistle of the male cardinal. It seemed natural to her that Norman’s favorite bird spoke such a funny language. The little beast’s song was notoriously difficult to describe in words, but sounded to her, like an exact replica of Norman’s snore, just higher pitched.

Your Children Need You
Fear is a common condition in children, but it is wrong to turn a blind eye to the problem and parents do not take it seriously because there is a risk of distorting children's personality as a result of real or unrealistic fears. However, it is better to talk about the experience before or after to understand the needs of the child or adult.

The White and Green Flying Ball of light
There are some things that happen in your life where your mantra is “Nobody has to know about this…EVER!” That was a moment that happened once with me on the way home from my sister’s house. My sister lived 50 miles away from me, but I would often drive down to visit for the weekend, or holidays. It wasn’t a difficult drive since most of it was done on a straight well-kept turnpike. It was a 45 minute trip and well worth it.

Everything and Anything
Ev was just scrolling on her phone for the last hour, happily laughing at some funny home pet videos. Lying down and then occasionally switching positions so that she would alternate between looking at her phone in the air with her back on the bed or lying on her stomach and propping herself up with her elbows, kicking her feet up to unconsciously exercise a little and burn a couple calories. She would've continued until a ray of sunshine suddenly blinded her in the eyes and she almost dropped her phone. Luckily she managed to keep her grip on her phone and used it for a split second to shield herself from the sun.

Marigolds
Some families gravitate toward one type of flower every year. My family, on my father’s side, have a tendency to buy and plant geraniums and pansies. The is because pansies were our grandmother’s favorite flower, and she was able to keep her geraniums growing throughout the winter inside the house.

I Needed a Job
How is it that I have gotten to this age, with three degrees and looking for a job? Who knew it would be so hard to find a job. I’m sitting here reading all the job listings, and there are a few I know I don’t qualify for: CLEANING HOUSES, that’s out, Professional Chef—does tuna-noodle-casserole made with Campbell’s mushroom soup and canned tuna count as “professional?” mmmm…Funeral home looking for licensed undertaker….yep, that’s me (I say with sarcasm).

An Ordinary Life
An Ordinary Life and an Unexpected Brown Box To say that my Grandmother was a hoarder is an understatement. She had 5 of everything you would ever want in life, and antiques were her favorite. When the family gathered to empty out her houses (yes, she had two houses, one in the middle of 50 acres of forest off the Appalachian Trail, and her house in historic Bethlehem, Pennsylvania), we each were allowed to take whatever caught our fancy.

The Day I Found Out
“Hey, mom? Did you order something online?” I asked, a confused look on my face. “No, why? Do you need me to?” Mom responds, the excitement and curiosity in her voice. “No, I don’t need anything, there’s just a box on the porch wrapped in brown paper. There’s not a name or anything on it.” I continued to pick the package up and check all sides for a name. Maybe it was just a mistake, surely someone left it here by accident. Out of nowhere, mom is by my side. Holding the box, and gently shaking it. I asked her not to shake it, but she just looked at me like I was crazy.
