Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story
Must Watch Lovely Series

When I watch a period drama, I'm always curious about the history of the era, the backgrounds of the characters, and the fashion, accents, and culture of the time. Before watching Queen Charlotte, the prequel to the popular series Bridgerton on Netflix, I did some research on the real Queen Charlotte and the era in which the show is set. However, the show begins with a disclaimer that it is not a history lesson but rather fiction inspired by fact. This immediately informs the viewer that the show should not be taken seriously and is a fictional tale about a king and queen and their extravagant subjects.
The focus of Queen Charlotte is on the arranged marriage between Queen Charlotte and King George III, rather than a romantic relationship that develops between them. The central conflict of the show revolves around George's desertion of Charlotte on their wedding night, and viewers are left wondering whether he has a mistress or whether he is a "beast or a troll." The chemistry between the two leads is engaging, and the actors deliver strong performances, particularly Corey Mylchreest as King George III, who captures the character's descent into madness without making it melodramatic or uncomfortable.
Queen Charlotte follows the same formula as Bridgerton, with elaborate costumes, steamy romance, and sumptuous storylines. The six episodes fly by despite being over an hour long, and the 18th-century setting is filled with passion and heart. The show also features Lady Danbury and Lady Bridgerton, who are not focused on finding partners for their heirs but on finding companionship for themselves. Arsema Thomas delivers an excellent performance as Lady Danbury, bringing both intelligence and humor to her role.
The supporting cast also gets a chance to shine in Queen Charlotte, with the romance between Brimsley and Reynolds providing some of the show's most beautiful moments. There is also a subplot involving Lady Bridgerton's father and Lady Danbury that explores love blossoming between two individuals regardless of their age and race. Overall, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is an entertaining period drama that delivers on its promise of lavish costumes, steamy romance, and sumptuous storylines.
The series is not meant to be a history lesson, but it does showcase the real-life issues that were prevalent during that period, such as the discrimination and prejudice faced by people of color, especially those who held positions of power. Queen Charlotte, who is of African descent, is shown as a strong and powerful woman who tries to make her mark on the British society, despite facing constant criticism and hostility from the aristocracy.
The show also does a good job of highlighting the mental health issues that King George III faced, which is a topic that is often overlooked in period dramas. Mylchreest portrays the character of George with empathy and sensitivity, and his gradual descent into madness is depicted with authenticity and nuance.
Overall, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is a well-made and entertaining period drama that is sure to appeal to fans of the Bridgerton series and anyone who enjoys lavish costumes, sumptuous sets, and steamy romance. While it may not be historically accurate, it does capture the spirit of the era and the struggles faced by those who lived in that time. With its talented cast, engaging storyline, and beautiful production design, this show is definitely worth a watch.
The final episode of the show was particularly emotional, to the point where it moved me to tears. I was surprised to find myself getting so emotional, especially during the scene where Reynolds and Brimsley dance together before transitioning into Brimsley dancing alone. I actually found myself more invested in their relationship than that of the main characters. Additionally, the scene where George hides from the heavens was particularly poignant, especially towards the end when they both got under the bed and reminisced about their past and the love they shared. It was heartwarming and heartbreaking all at the same time.
